What is the legal drinking age in Ontario Canada, and what ID do we need?
My friends and are goin to Canada during out winter break for 3 days. We are all under 21 but are all 20 years old. I heard that they won't accept an American Drivers Liscense at the bars. Is this true? If so, what are we supposed to use as identification to prove we are all 20?
If your driver's license has picture ID on it, then the bar should accept it. Having said that, a bar does have the right to refuse entry to any person who they suspect being under age; even with correct ID. I have seen bars refuse entry with passports; and I really wouldnt recommend bringing that to the bar in any case. Many bars now will actually put the drivers license on a data reader type thing to record every person who comes into the bar; in case of problems. (eg fires or shootings or just to ban a person)
In terms of age, Ontario has a legal drinking age of 19. If your license does not have a picture to prove this; a health card with a picture and another piece of ID may be taken. This is because too many people were too good at forging someone else's signature when asked to prove the ID without a picture to back it up. :D
For coming by road to Canada, you do NOT need a passport until 2008 possibly. (I say possibly because even this latest round has been delayed so many times) If your friends and you are coming by air or sea; after January 23 2007, you WILL need a passport to return to the USA.

18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec; 19 elsewhere

please see the offical link on what they will except. This is only a guideline. 98% of bars will except ID.. for example state issued DL's or ID cards. It is a great place to party.. So have fun while you are here

personally I would never take my passport to a night club. your drivers license should be fine. Here in the province of Quebec the legal drinking age is 18...bars and clubs are open untill 3 am :)

My Daughter went to college outside of Detroit. And went to Canada quite often her first couple of years in school and the age is nineteen . I would think your license would be fine

You must be at least 19 years old and you must show your driver's license or any other ID's as long as it shows your birth date and it has your picture on it.
Tyce
The drinking age is 19,
Your drivers licence should work most of the
time but if you want to be sure you can use
your passport
QueenBee
The legal drinking age in Ontario is 19 and you will just need your driver's license.

19 I believe. DL would be ok

A driver's liscense should be all you need in a bar or night club if you are 19 or older. BUT, I believe that starting in January the U.S. is requiring ALL people entering the States to show a passport. There is still some talk about this being postponed for a few months - so before you travel check exactly what documents you'll need in order to return.
