What is the warmest type of winter coat? (For UK and a Canadian winter)?

something with wool or fleece on the inside, and a windbreaker-type on the outside. Make it as thick as possible and make sure it has a hood.

Know-it-all
The latest three layer jakets are the best.

They have an outer water and wind-proof layer. One's with a hood make a big difference. And look for one with an adjustable waist band. It helps to trap the heat in the upper body area.

The second layer is an insulating layer usually fleece or similar. Make sure it can be zipped right round the outer layer. The button types are cheaper and not as easy to use. It should have a cuff-link that is tight around the wrists.

The final layer is a sleeveless inner layer for extra comfort. Again, just an insulating layer for those extra cold days.

These layers should be good enough to wear alone or togeather in any combination. That will give you the most flexibility to cover most weather related issues.

I live north of Montreal, and I adore my 100% wool mid-thigh length pea jacket...It looks great and it is gloriously warm, and is perfect for that No. 1 Canadian winter pastime...shoveling snow.

You cannot compare the two countries on many levels especially clothing.

I live in Canada - the best material for the winter here where it goes to minus 40 degrees celcius with layers of jagged ice covering everything for half the year. The best material is thinsulate --- thinsulate

in the uk you can wear any light jacket. make sure you wear a nice sweater thick pants for the damp winter - it only goes down to 0 celcius the winter in canada is 40 degrees colder at least.

A RAB jacket is roasty toasty in winter, but they cost about £100, They come in Red, Blue and Black and are available from good outdoor retail outlets. They keep you warm, but you do not overheat. Ladies sizes are available, too. For a slightly less expensive version, try a North Face duvet jacket. They also do the trick.

In Southern Australia I use a sheepskin shirpa its very warm

you need some kind of ski or climbing jacket. try Millets .or ski shops.

I would try something like a Carhart type of jacket that is used by ranchers etc....

Brand wise? Carhart is good becuase it's made for people that work outside. Very heavy & warm.

Also any snowmobiling jacket will keep you nice and warm.. and they're good for blocking the wind & keeping it out. I would suggest Yamaha.

UK and Canada have different climates. Canadian winters (especially in the prairies) are frigid cold and a fur coat will keep you warm (even when the wind chill gets to the minus 40 mark). If wearing fur is not possible a down filled jacket is also warm but not as warm as fur.

If you can get past the anti fur people then the warmest winter coat is a fur or fleece of an animal. It's what the natives used for thousands of years. I had a mink coat once and it was the only thing that kept me warm in an Ottawa winter.

Naomi
Animal fur.
