What is there to do in Northern Ontario?

I am planning a trip this summer and it has to be in the vicinity of Saulte St. Marie to North Bay, so nothing west of Thunder Bay.

Something natural (moderate hiking prefered) would be nice.

And please don't say Algonquin I've been there hundreds of times.

You could go hiking, fishing, camping, golfing, hunting, bird watching. You can stay at beautiful resorts or you can pitch a tent almost anywhere.

The area you've described is HUGE! There are about 700 miles between North Bay and Thunder Bay. There are a lot of towns and cities to visit.

Head south.

Algonquin as you KNOW isn't up in this region. Lake Superior Park IS, for you uninformed people.

It has many rivers and lakes, even just along hwy 17. There are many nature trails that you can take. If you go up to Agawa River area, watch for signs for the rock Pictographs. (ancient artwork embeded into the rocks by natives) It is a well travelled, well marked trail to them and the coastline is rugged and awesome. It's a real touristy area, and I think you have to pay to park?

Gargantuan trail is very nice also, and leads to a nice lake. Midgemunging (sp) Lake is a fair hike also from the highway. Good fishing for lake trout and speckled trout.

If you don't go to an organised campground, you don't have to pay a cent for camping. Just hike along a logging road and find a nice protected spot to pitch your tent.

Most of the rivers and lakes in this area have water clean enough to drink from.

Within the boundaries of Sault ste Marie, you can hike along the trails of Hiawatha highlands. Just ask directions from any local to get there. The trails are also used as X-country ski trails in the winter. Hiawatha falls is there, and although small, quite senic.

30KM (20 miles) north of the Sault is Goulais River. There is a place called STokely creek in the area that has miles of trails, also used as X-country ski trails in the winter. There are many lakes along the way to camp beside.

Hope this helps.

Hi! Actually if you like nature there is lots in northern Ontario other than Algonquin! There are also other things to see if you want an indoor day - Science North in Sudbury is extremely interesting - lots of info on mining, natural resourses, etc. (they actually have a bed of nails and you can lie on it and it really didn't hurt at all)!! Just outside Saulte Ste Marie to the North is a big skiing area in the winter but in the summer there are tonnes of hiking trails and you can swim in the pond there. About an hour our so outside of Saulte Ste Marie going west on the trans Canada highway is an area called pancake bay. Keep an eye out on your right before you get there and there is a large bridge from which you can see a large waterfall! There's parking there and its great for hiking and exploring, but there are some black bears so be "bear aware"!! In pancake bay there's some touristy shops but they have a lot of aboriginal art, etc. and I find they're worth a look. Just before you get to the shops there are some provincial parks on the left hand side of the highway that lead to a beach! It's part of Lake Superior I believe and the swimming is great and every time I've been there the beach has been quiet so you don't have to worry about being sandwiched in amongst people! Overall, there's lots to do in Northern Ontario, when I first moved up there (now in the South again) I found even just keeping my eyes open for beautiful areas on the drive led to some great hikes and views. I will say though that I have seen a lot of animals over the years so animal alarms on your vehicle is a good idea and you definitely want to time your drive out of the Saulte so its not at night cause there's an area about a half hour out of town that has had a big problem with moose on the trans Canada but its mainly only a night time hazard. Hope this gives a few ideas. Have a good trip!!

Tina Get The Axe!
Look under northern Ontario on the yahoo tool bar and there should be lots of info or just put info on northern Ontario, but personally i didn't know there is anything to do up there LOL

Hi Jamie - I know you said nothing west but have you considered Manitoulin Island? Its not quite as north as you wanted but I had a great time there! There is the Cup & saucer Trail. Its a great place to visit.

The area you are talking about travels along the Highway 11/17 corridor from Thunder Bay until you get to Nipigon which is about 100 kilometers. From there the two highways divide and you can take highway 11 up North through Long Lac, Hearst, kapuskasing, Cochrane, and New Liskeard down to North Bay. If you take the Highway 17, the views are better, and you go through towns and small cities like White River, Wawa and Sudbury. If you check out these cities online I am sure that you will find some visitor attraction that may be of interest to you. I cannot say exactly what it is that you would like, but for an example Hearst offers white water rafting and a 25 km trail walk. White River is known as the home of "Winnie the Pooh"...Wawa is known for it's Canadian Armed Forces Base...so I hope you find what you are looking for and have fun. Hope this helps.
