I live in TO and I think it is the best place to live. I have lived in other cities but find myself always coming back. There is nothing like it.
Downtown TO is a shopping haven, great clubs, great restaurants - every kind of cuisine imaginagble. Toronto is one of the most multi cultural cities in the world - all different people are here and we all live very harmoniously with one another. This kind of environment lets us learn about different cultures, different foods and languages - helps us grow as people.
Toronto is not too expensive of a city to live in either, as compared to other cities in Canada. There are several tourist attractions here as well, CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, Ontario Science Centre and the Eaton Centre to name a few.
U of T is a great school as well, a name of prestige no less. I attended there as well and found the school's culture outstanding. The school has a lot of history and depth.
You will enjoy your stay here in Toronto and I'm sure you will meet great people. Some people say it is not a friendly city but I say otherwise. It is a fast paced and lively city, people can be rushed but otherwise if you ask for directions or what time is it, people will respnnd and if they don't, then they are the exception. There are rude people in every city no matter where you go, but then the nice ones surpass those rude ones. People say oh there's lots of crime, well yes there is crime here, but it's everywhere in the world. Toronto is not exceptionally unsafe compared to other cities in Canada who like to point the finger at TO but they are just as unsafe, if not more.

Yes it does get cold in TO but only in the winter which is quite normal for many parts of the world. The summer is very hot and spring and fall are very refreshing and cool. It is a great city! |

It's Canada's version of NYC. I liked it. I found the people friendly. |

I have not lived there, but visited about six years ago.I have nothing really bad to say about the place. It's like a smaller, and more chilled version of New York, good for shopping if you like that sort of thing ( Yonge street is your best bet for that, and the nightlife was very mellow and chilled out, no trouble and no staff telling you to drink up. Hard Rock Cafe is a must, CN Tower is a must ( certainly the highest and most spectacular viewpoint over any city that I've seen ), and of course it's a perfect base from which to visit Niagara Falls which again is a must....it's mind-blowing.
Im english also, and very envious of you! Obviously it is a while since i've been there, so it may have changed since then, but I can't see why anyone wouldn't love the place.
There'll be better answers than this, but hope it will encourage you. Enjoy! |

VOTE for Judy C...'s answer.
I live in Toronto too, its a great multicultural city.
I want to add to that answer and comment about other answers.
You could decide to do nothing, go nowhere, and be bored, or you could go and explore the new and the old, the sports, and theatre, and world-class concerts, all the festivals and events, big and small, including the various Jazz Festivals, Blues Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, cultural food festivals on "The Danforth" and Harbourfront and Pacific Mall, The Chinese New Years Festival, Ice sculptures around Christmas/(western) New Years, etc... Buy a bike from Canadian Tire or a used one from e-bay perhaps, and enjoy exercise on some portions of the hundreds of kilometres of bike trails through forested woodlands and fields of wildflowers in the ravines in the city, take your bike over to the Toronto Islands and get a great view of the skyline, and enjoy the beautiful park there in the warm months. You can rent canoes at the Toronto Islands and paddle around the lagoons. Enjoy Shakespeare In The Park at High Park on a warm mid-summer's evening. You can also take some day-trips, like to quaint little Niagara-On-The-Lake, see some of the old Forts that kept the remainder of British North America from being swallowed up by the Yanks, see the Niagara Gorge, and the Falls, try a winter ski trip up north in winter, take a weekend trip and see Ottawa's Tulip festival, millions of tulips donated by the Dutch Royal Family since WW2, and try some camping at some Provincial Parks with friends or classmates. Point Pelee National park is something to see.
etc....oh , and try some Poutine too :) Welcome ! |

Toronto is amazing for everything, honestly.
It has friendly and non friendly people. They get annoying after 2 weeks.. everyone and everything is in your way, it's really busy.
The shopping, nightlife, and food are AMAZING, there's so many to choose from. You're always going to have something to do, even if it's just walking down the streets, it's very interesting.
Overall, you'll have an aamzing time! |

I just moved to Toronto earlier this year and I have to say I am not a fan.
I never understood this comparison to NY - just a tourism marketing ploy, it is NOTHING like NYC!!!
But having said that it is a perfectly normal, safe place to live, good public transport, friendly people so I am sure you will be just fine living here.
Just utterly boring and generic, with no real soul. |
