What is usually cheaper to buy in the US than in Canada? |
I'm to New Orleans next month and don't travel much, so was wondering what I should shop for? (Clothes, electronics, or stuff in US that's not in Canada, etc.) |

I live in a border city in Ontario (Windsor/Detroit, Mi) so consider myself an expert on this subject...lol...as I cross the border frequently to pick up things. I can assure you that almost anything is cheaper in the States. Don't know which province you're from, and what the sales tax is in Louisiana, but, right off the bat, I'm sure you will be paying considerably less in tax. Our tax here in Ontario is 13% (GST/PST), while in Michigan, sales tax is 6%, so there is usually a savings on tax alone. Shoes, clothes, toiletries...all considerably cheaper in the States. Linens, home accessories, etc., as well. Electronics I'm careful about, both in price, and also the hassle you may have to endure if you have a problem with it and it's not purchased in Canada. CDs, DVDs, etc., I don't find much difference in, and if I can catch a good buy at Future Shop or something over here, I usually do just as well. Having said that, there are usually certain electronics and such that become available in the States much earlier than they are here. For example, I don't think we have the i Phone here yet but it has been in the States a long time, so you might want to keep your eye out for something new and innovative, to be the"first on your block". But be sure it conforms to Canada's requirements for use.

Clothes can be way cheaper especially if you find a Ross Dress for Less store. I bought Bill Blass jeans there for $6 and $10 US earlier this year. Most other stuff seems to be pretty close in price these days, if it's small enough to fit in a suitcase. |

In my opinion I buy everything I need when I go back home. The dollar may be just about even but things are still cheaper there from clothes to shoes to booze (way cheaper). Shop for everything |

I think theres a state tax on most everything in Canada that helps all social programs ,& makes most things a little more up there.I don t know how your traveling,we used to stop at the duty free shop at the border bridge area and get stuff at discount, like no tax on cigarettes,2 fifths of whiskey,n so on...they tell ya whats legal to take accross without paying extra taxes there at customs area,& have some signs up too, like at the ambassador bridge.I suppose ,same with airports... |
