What kind of questions do the border guards at the American/Canadian border ask you going down to the US?

I've never been to the US before so I'm not quite sure what to expect.

They'll just ask you where you're headed and how long you plan to be in the States.

Arriving in the US and on return, expect to show your passport. If you don't have one, you can't cross anymore. You may be asked where you're from, why you are coming in to the US, how long you are staying and whether you are transporting any perishible food items. Pack light and expect that your car might be searched because random searches take place. Go to a customs office and pick up a brochure there to get more questions answered. Relax and expect it to take a little while.

The world's high security alert makes the border rules strict.

Upon crossing back from the US, you can expect the same, although it has been reported that the wait time is less. They'll want to know where you are going and why, where you are been, why and for how long. You may have to show receipts for any purchases you made in the US and pay taxes on items over a certain limit (US citizens do the same when leaving Canada). I always have an envelope to put all my receipts in just in case I need them. You may have to take park your car at the gate parking lot and take your receipts inside to pay taxes on them.

The border workers follow the rules exactly. It will help you to do your homework and know what they are by obtaining a brochure from a local customs office or looking for the border crossing websites on line.

It's not that easy anymore going in either direction, but it's worth it. Have fun.

They will ask you to remove your clothing so they can do a long and generous body cavity search
