What kind of shoes/boots should I take on this trip to Canada this winter?

I asked a simliar question a few days ago, only it was for a jacket =P. Anyway, I'm going on a trip to Canada this winter and was wondering what kind of shoes/boots I need? Down here in the south we don't have like any snow at all in the winter so I'm not really sure what kind of footwear I would need for the snow. My friend said to grab a pair of boots, but I'm not sure what kind of boots, and I kinda figured actual snow boots would over do it since I wouldn't be climbing mountains etc, but I'm not sure. Would just Timberland boots be ok? Or would I need some other kind of boots?

If it helps, I'll be going to Calgary, Canada...so its a city/suburb area. Thanks in advance.

IN calgary it gets really really cold during the winter and especially in feb. So you'll need something that will help keep the warmth in your toes so they don't break off. So bring lots of warm socks as well to help keep the warmth in your feet.
for boots.... i think the timberland might be a bit much....But if you want you could. just boots that are waterproof should be fine.
Just make sure you get boots that go above your ankle because sometimes the snow is that high and it isn't shoveled. So you don't let the snow get into your shoes.

Don;'t bother...buy them here. You need some heavy duty gear for an Alberta winter, and if you're coming from somewhere that doesn't have the same type of winter, then you won't be able to buy good boots.

Having said that, GRIP is the most important thing - make sure the boots have deep, heavy treads. Next, buy a size bigger than normal to allow for multiple pairs of socks, And of course, make sure the boots have good lining.

In Calgary... you wont get by with sneakers in the winter as we do in vancouver. You need something waterproof with some lining in them for winter. Ankle high is best.
You should try to get to Banff while there as well. Again hiking boots best for that but in Bannf townsite you can get away with decent walking shoes.

Yay! I live in Calgary. Winter here can be cold, with a fair amount of snow. We don't have predictable winters at all... we have a weather pattern here called 'chinooks' which, without being super technical, causes it to become really windy and causes the temperature to rise, usually to above freezing. This makes everything wet and slushy, so make sure your boots are waterproof!!!

Timberlands, so long as they're waterproof should work fine.

Well, you're right about the snow boots being a bit over the top. Not many people wear those because they're so big and clunky and just not necessary unless you're climbing a mountain. Lots of people just continue with their running shoes in the winter but that may wear your shoes out and you may find it cold cause you're not used to the snow. I would recommend ankle high shoes or boots. Have fun in Canada!

I live in montreal and I wear Roos.

I live in Calgary and I wear my running shoes except on really cold days. Having something that is at least somewhat waterproof is a good idea because the Chinooks will melt the snow. Most of us city dwellers are not out that much, so unless it gets really cold (about a week at the most) we don't wear heavy boots.
