well, you're NOT suppose to take fruits, veggies, plants, or any meats through the border BUT... just try. hide it.
if they ask you if you have anything you can just say no.
i've gone through countless times with peameal bacon, plants, fruit, you name it and they NEVER check me.
when in doubt you can always say you didn't even know it was there since people were in and out of your vehicle so much while you were up there and all they will do is take it from you and dispose of it at the border. they took an orange from me once but it was up in the front seat and i admitted to "just and orange" and he took it from me. no big deal.
also... something they have in canada that they don't have in the US... besides Peameal Bacon ( yumm yumm !! ) they have Trilliums. Trilliums are the provincial flower and it's against the law to pick them... you have to leave them in the wild. Here in New Jersey they have them in hanging planters... such a shame !! |

There is a department of the US Government called the Government Accountability Office (equivalent to our auditor general position) that wrote a report about getting across the border without going through Customs and Immigration. You can find the report here and it is rather interesting.
They try to write the report in a way that potential readers have no way of exploiting the information embedded within, but they give out enough information for some pretty good leads. Specifically, the thing that jumped at me is that while the border security concerning the transport of vehicles is relatively good, the transport of people by foot across the Canada-USA border is quite porous and is unlikely to be detected.
Although sensors exist at the border (this is not mentioned in the report), they are not scattered densely enough to be comprehensive. In addition, animals have a nasty tendency to not pay attention to international boundaries and if youâre somebody at the CBP looking at sensor tripping reports, you wouldnât have any way of differentiating between deers and humans crossing where you have the sensors.
It is also too expensive to have infrared satellites continuously scanning the border in real-time for intrusions. Although this can technically be done, it probably isnât worth the huge costs to do it real-time. However, non-real time infrared satellite activity can yield very nice fruit. Most prominently was the July 2005 bust of the Aldergrove/Lynden drug tunnel that went underneath the ground just east of the legal border crossing on 264 St and 0 Ave.

What about catapulting things across the border?
Sacha Says:

As funny as this sounds, it could probably be done once you get your calculations correct. You could reliably throw things about 50 meters. I donât think this is enough to do house-to-house, however.
At a distance of 100 meters, however⊠again, itâs just about doing it reliably.

This article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trebuchet has some details on trebuchets âŠ

The money quotation:
âT-Wrecks, a trebuchet with a more contemporary design, can throw pianos weighing 230 kg (500 lbs) over 150 m (500 ft). In England a group of farmers threw a car close to 120 m (400 ft) and a 250 litre (55 Imperial gallon, 66 US gallons) drum filled with gasoline over 300 m (1000 ft).â Hmmm âŠ

Somehow I would think setting one of these things up would make you susceptible to getting smart bombed by some F-18âs patrolling the border⊠ideally the device would be camouflaged. I donât know how you would camouflage a trebuchet that can propel things 300 meters! Not that catapults are any better.

An underground rail cannon should be pretty easy to hide :-)

I propose we start by annexing Oroville

Fresh water, short supply lines, cover by rail cannon, and large supply of angry fruit farmers nearby.
Honestly, I bet the US defense department does NOT anticipate an army of granite-throwing trebuchets backed up by advance rail cannon fire power. An unconventional army indeed ⊠by the time they revise their tactics, Spokane will be ours! |
