"Hi".......I see by your profile that you are British and it appears that you are interested in Oceanography or at least seem to have a knowledge of animals !

So to answer your question Victoria B.C. is the capital of British Columbia and is on Vancouver Island !

It is named after Queen Victoria and all of B.C. is primarily the "Queens' English" with the soft Canadian accent !

Vancouver Island incidentally was named after "Capt" George Vancouver who sailed around this area as Master of H.M.S Discovery in the last century !

So, That's about as English as one can get...lol !

If you are thinking of moving here you won't find a more diverse area for Marine Life anywhere else in this great big beautiful world including the "Orcus Orcanus" !

Glad to help ! *S* (Michael C...)

The only place where you will find some French spoken on Vancouver Island is at Tofino and Ucluelet (West Coast). Many younger folk (students) come out from Quebec, pick fruit in the okanagan and then carry on to Vancouver Island West Coast and "hang out". You can go anywhere within this community in the summer and find someone that speaks French (often that someone cannot speak English).

What language do they speak on Vancouver Island? English. It was first settled by English people not French. West of Ontario, Canada is 99% English speaking ( not counting a few indians)

French is mainly in Quebec.

Vancouver Island is English speaking, for the most part. Maybe there are some French speakers there. At any rate, you will see things written in both languages.

The main language spoken on Vancouver Island is English with many people also speaking French which are Canada's two official languages. Mandarin, Cantonese, Italian, Hindi and the languages of many other nations are also spoken here as well as in the remainder of Canada as we are a multi cultural nation.

uncookedspud
English is the only language you need to know here. French can be useful but English is enough. http://travelrumble.com/destination.php?cityid=18

Why they speak British Columbian of course. However the Vancouver Island accent is quite strong so you even if you can speak British Columbian unless you're familiar with the linguistic peculiarities of Vancouver Island you might have trouble understanding what they/re saying. You could probably pick up a language dictionary at your local bookstore which should help you quite a bit. Just ask for an English to British Columbian dictionary, I'm sure the staff will be able to point you in the right direction.

Most of Canada speaks English only, and even in Québec just about everyone understands English. Vancouver, however, is nowhere near Québec... so no, they are not predominantly Francophones.

Cuddly_Bear
They speak English. The French population is in Quebec.
