Being thought of as just another city in Canada, or worse yet, anything other than the best city in Canada.

People who call the Metro the "subway".

Drivers who think they should be allowed to drive on Ste-Catherine street when the light is green, rather than giving jaywalkers priority.

People who point out that the Main (Boul. St-Laurent) really doesn't run North-South (or Ste-Catherine doesn't run East-West, etc.)--and perhaps by extension, GPS devices.

Being reminded of winter in summer.

Being asked where they're from (other than tourists--but you have to know for sure they're tourists).

People will get offended with whatever strategy you take for language...probably the best is to just start talking to them in the language (English or French) of your choice, without asking if they speak it.

From what I hear they all hate Americans. I work with several people who travel there on a regular basis and they all report this to be true. Don't expect the red carpet treatment when you go there.

Montreal is a very bilingual city so don't worry about not being able to speak French. However, you might offend people if you assume they speak english without asking first. Also, don't worry about them hating Americans - they know that Americans = tourists spending money in their city.

Canadians are very open and welcoming. If you can't speak French, unlike some users have stated, they still will welcome you kindly, and most speak and understand English well. Also, although Canadians may oppose the US government's decisions, Canadians realize that the citizens of the USA don't necessarily hold the same views. Canadians do not hate Americans. Just act normally and unoffensively as you would to an American. The same things offend Canadians and Americans.

They do not hate Americans in general.

They hate ANYONE who doesn't speak french. Period.
This also includes Ontario folks like me who pass through Quebec on way to North Sydney Nova Scotia.
If you stop for gas, food etc in Quebec and don't speak their language, they instantly hate you.

xxtra chocolate
If you can't speak french. French Quebecers take their culture very seriously.

Torsion Stampede
Americans. especially U.S. Americans. And People who dont speak french.

swim&splash
Not being able to speak French. And saying that French people suck...
