What parts/suburbs of Ottawa don't speak French?

In Ottawa everyone will address you in English first. A lot of people are bilingual but English is the language that is used.

Orleans does have a greater percentage of French and they do seem to be more vocal there. They recently got upset because a community centre was named after a English mayor rather than a French person. Still even in Orleans people will address you in English first so you'll have no problems in dealing with others.

The only time you'll be addressed in French first is if you keep going east past Orleans. When you start getting into Cumberland and Rockland area you'll still be ok in English but most people speak French. That though is really outside of Ottawa.

The only issue with French is in the Public Service. To work in the public service you need to speak french.

The city has been divided really into 3 parts.

ENGLISH: The South and West mostly speak English (IE: Kanata, Barhaven, South Keys, etc...)

MIXED: Downtown, being so close to the QuÃ©bec border is forced to speak both English and French. But, once again, the further West downtown, the less French there is.

FRENCH: The North and East of Ottawa speak French (but know English fluently as well). Areas include (Orleans, St. Laurent, etc...

It's a big generalization, but basically people west of the Rideau Canal are mainly Anglophones, while the people east of the Canal are largely Francophones (but they do speak English in public). The further away from the Canal, the bigger the percentage of them respectively.

To simply answer your question, Ottawa West, Nepean, Barrhaven, and Kanata. You'll rarely have anyone speaking french in these areas. If you're looking farther, it's West and south of Kanata.

All of the previous answers are correct though..you won't have any trouble speaking English anywhere in Ottawa.

Yes Orleans is french speaking, but for the rest as Ottawa is a large city the french is scattered all over the city, not in one area in particular... Orleans is your best bet if that is what you are looking for...

Or come to the QuÃ©bec side in Gatineau...

Hi - Take it from those of us who live here..
I've lived here all my life and basically all the
areas that "OTTguy" has given you are anglophone.
English-speaking.
I live in Nepean, and you rarely find anyone speaking
French.
Stick to central West and further - Nepean, Barrhaven,
Kanata, Parkdale, Parkwood Hills,
and you'll find mainly english-speaking people.

There Is no "northern" Ottawa really.
North is downtown...

No suburbs speak only English in Ottawa however going to the west of Ottawa reduces the per Capita.

However 99.9% of existing (not immigrated from other countries) speak English.... even in Orleans

50 % of all people in Ottawa including the suburbs speak French and English.. It is the capital of Canada but not the Capital of Ontario.. that is Toronto but the Parliament is in Ottawa.. Ottawa was made Capital city of Canada by Queen Victoria of Britain..who was also the first British Queen of Canada.. and of all the Commonweath countries...she decided on Ottawa as capital because they speak French.. and because it's not too close to American borders which important in the 1900's ....in every suburb someone will be speaking English but only in Ottawa area... other than that only in Quebec which is about three times the size of the country France in Europe... everyone there speaks French.. and in Montreal... people speak French and English..
