What should I do about moving to Canada?

I am a American Citizen and I am hoping to move to Canada soon when I graduate High School and go to College there, I want to go to College for Visual Arts and I would like to start a new life in Canada as well.

I am planning on getting a job soon so I can save up for a house there and I live in Ohio so it wont take me that long to get there when I decide if I move to go there or not. I am planning on moving there when I finish High School if I did not mention that and I need to know about the health care and taxes, etc.

And is it possible for a American to become a Canadian, Canadian Citizen if one was born in the United States? I've been thinking along time to move to Canada and how is the food and people there? Are they friendly towards Americans and if you become a Canadian Citizen how would they treat you if you become one?

Sorry if I didn't made any since, I would like to know if Canada would be a good place for me to live so I can start a new life and how can I get a passport to Canada? And would I need to learn French if I had plans on living there? I've already talked to my parents about me deciding to move there and both of them are ok with that because my dad was born in a Military Base up in Canada and he was raised there.
Additional Details
Also where is the safest place to live? Sorry if this question didn't made any since.

I lived in Ontario and moved to California a few months ago. It is possible for an American to become a Canadian Citizen, but it might take a while. You are so lucky! Now that I have lived in both Canada and USA, I'd pick Canada any day. People are so much friendlier!

There is a very good chance is that, whereever the school you attend is, will be the city you choose to live in. This is because the major Canadian cities are great cities - clean, safe, vibrant, and cosmopolitan.

According to a CNN article, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary are all ranked in the top 10 cities in the world to live, with Vancouver being ranked #1. These are my three personal favourite Canadian cities, Toronto being my favourite. Canadian cities have consistently and significantly lower crime than American cities [Toronto homicide rate is 1.8 per 100,000 vs Detroit (42.1), NYC (7.0), Los Angeles (13.4) and Cincinnati (20.1), and in Canada, Vancouver (2.6) and Calgary (1.9)].
If you want to go into the arts industry, you will need to live in a larger city. Toronto is by far the leader in arts and culture in Canada, ranked as having the third largest theatre-scene in the world behind New York and London.

You would not need to know French to live here, although you will pick up on some words since all labels, road signs, etc are in English AND French. The healthcare is fantastic for Canadian citizens as you are covered for all hospital procedures and family doctor visits, so you will never have to worry about being able to pay for healthcare. People often complain about how terrible the system is and how long they wait, but these are people waiting for non-emergency and less important procedures, and priority obviously must be given to those who need healthcare more. This is to say that, if you needed a surgical procedure urgently, you would get it right away. Taxes in Canada are higher than in the United States, but it is very VERY clearly obvious. You can tell that you are in a country with higher taxes - so your tax dollars don't go to waste by any means. The "slums" of our major cities are nothing compared to those of L.A, Chicago, NYC, etc.

I will try to quickly explain Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. As I already said, Toronto is my favourite city in the world. Everything about it - it is clean, safe, exciting, modern and in general just a very nice city. There's so much culture there that it is amazing. THe arts scene in Toronto is massive. Toronto has a stellar transit system - efficient, clean, and reliable. U of T is right downtown. Downtown Toronto is amazing, but there's also plenty of other things that make Toronto great. It has over 1500 parks (this is MUCH higher than American cities), it is very close to the Niagara Falls and surrounding winery region, it is close to the Muskokas (a beautiful cottage country of hundreds of lakes north of the city), as well as Canada's Wonderland (recently purchased by Cedar Point). It would also be relatively close to Ohio so you could see your family much easier. People often say the weather is the worst thing about Toronto, but you would obviously have similar winters in Ohio. Also, Toronto has the largest underground city in the world, connecting all the major buildings and sites of downtown in over 27 km of store lined halls and paths - it is called P.A.T.H. Toronto is not cheap, but there are tons of options available so you would be able to find something.

Vancouver is also incredible. My uncle went to work out there for a couple years and never came back - loved it way too much. I've been and it truly is a spectacular city. If I wasn't going to live in Toronto, I would live in Vancouver without question. Because I'm not as familiar with it as I am with Toronto, I can't say too much, and I can say even less about Calgary. Regardless, I highly recommend Toronto - it would be a decision you would never regret, in fact, you will find it may be one of the best decisions you've ever made. It's an absolutely incredible, world-class city with endless opportunities in the arts.

I am not very familiar with the immigration system, but if you get your education in Canada, as well as living here the entire time, you will have a great advantage in applying for citizenship. Anyways, best of luck, hopefully it is a smooth transition for you.

If you want to move to Canada you will need to learn proper English, French, Chinese, and Hindi as well as Punjab.
In order to work here you will need to get a Social Insurance Number(without it you can not work).
You can only get a passport if you have lived here for at least five years and have become an immigrant legally.
To get legal status your name will go onto the bottom of the waiting list for people wanting to get into Canada. Currently this list is 2 !/2 years long.
Many people do not like Americans; don't expect any special treatment. If you are planning to move to B.C., then you will be legally required to participate in the Provincial Medical Services Plan. It is NOT free; currently it is $265 for 3 months.
The safest place for you to live is probably your parents' home until you grow up.

All right mate, Canadian's generaly like American's except when they make fun of Canadian's. But as far as an American coming here, They will love you. Canadians are the friendliest people you could ever meet...well along with aussi's. Safest place in Canada...one of the 3 terrirotry's but chances are you don't want to live up there so i'd have to say P.E.I but its not very populated there. For what you are looking for i'd say move to Vancouver Island or the Lower Mainland. Which is in B.C. You could go to UVIC or UBC which are too great schools. Another one is Kwantlan but its not as good of a school but still decent.

It is very easy to immigrate to Canada. see website below

-You do not need to speak french to come to Canada. we are the most multi cultural country in the world. Any language you speak goes here.

O Smart One
Well I hope you're moving to Ontario, and since I live here, I'll answer your questions as best as I can.

Healthcare - Seeing a general doctor is always free in Canada. However, specialised services like optomatrists and dentists charge you the full amount. Prescription drugs are partially subsidised by the government, and it is usually cheaper then in the States. However, you must be an Ontario citizen to receive these benefits (OHIP).

Taxes - The sales tax is 13% (5% GST, 8% PST) with lower taxes for food and a few other items. The income tax varies from I think 25-45%.

Citizenship - You can get Canadian citizenship after spending 4 years as a resident in Canada. To work, you must obtain a working permit (similar to green card).

Food - Most of the food is the same as those in the States. There are a few special ones that are found here. Poutine : French fries with gravy and cheese. Harvies : A burger chain here, where they add the toppings of your choice. Tim Hortons : Coffee/Donuts, the US has some too. Mr. Sub : Similar to Subway's. The rest is the same as the US mostly. Plus, food here is more expensive, it's hard to find a fast food meal for under CAD $7.

People - In Toronto, there is a large Asian minority/majority (depends on which neighborhood). There are also African-Canadian's, and caucasian people. Asian's are usually found in the suburbs (Scarborough, Richmond Hill, etc.). Out of Toronto, there are still large Asian minorities in other cities as well. Canada is also very multicultural and there are people from all around the world. We treat Americans like we treat anyone else.

French - You do not need to learn French unless you're planning to go to Quebec. Here, you only need to learn French from Grade 1 to Grade 9.

Safest place - Depends really, most places here are much safer then the US. For example Toronto's murder rate is only around 80 a year (usually less), which is low considering the size of Toronto. Robberies, carjackings, and other major crimes are usually rare too.

Canadian Passport - I think this is what you meant by "how can I get a passport to Canada". You get it after getting citizenship and applying for it.

Jobs - Canada usually has a higher unemployment rate then the US. However, the jobs here are also usually higher paying. It shouldn't be hard finding one.
