Within an easy walk there is the NHL Hall of Fame if you are so inclined; Sundays there is an awesome flea market at St. Lawrence Market (about ten minutes walk east); ten minutes walk west has you at CN Tower, and the revolving restaurant on top isn't as expensive as one might think, also they have a section with a glass floor that kids love.

Brunch in the lower level of the York is about $16 and is well worth it, and there is also a MacDonalds in Union Station that is connected to the hotel and room service features Pizza Hut.

I also found the concierge desk to be most helpful!

you will be very close to the lakeshore where the ferries load up
You can always eat @ Mickey D's if money is a problem
bur why stay in the Royal york if you are poor
there is a longhorns steakhouse down on front street just a couple of blocks west of the hotel

Things to see:
~CN Tower (you can go up in an elevator, great view...)
~Jays game @ the Skydome/Rogers Centre
~Ontario Science Centre
~The Distillery District
~Centre Island
~Harbourfront

Dining...well, there's an Eastside Mario's that I kind of think is in the approximate area that would be ok, they are not too expensive. There's also a Shopsy's which is affordable. :)

Basically if you go into the chain restaurants, the prices will not get too ridiculous. The problem is only the fancy-schmancy dress-up-to-eat restaurants that will empty your wallet.

I lived in Toronto for 5yrs.... there's tons to do in downtown To...especially near the Royal York...

1) Richtree Restaurant is at the BCP and it has great prices... it's sort of like a cafeteria but it has like different cuisines/etc...l so it looks like an open market and they stamp your card w/ what you've purchases and at the end you pay... it's awesome and the food is great.

2) Things to do...
- Eaton Centre (Mall)
- Centre Island -- there's an amusement park area but it's geared towards the young but you can take the ferrie there and rent paddle boat / canoes, etc.
- Queen Street West is a crafty/area...
- Visit the public market on Front Street
- take the TTC (Subway) and explore the city...
- There's Canada's wonderland in North York which is an awesome amusement park
- CN tower is a great view
- Playdium -- is an awesome arcade/movie theather
- Visit Parliament , U of T

Movie Theaters are awesome in Canada
