If you are going by AIR to Canada, US, Mexico, Bermuda & the Caribbean then you will need a valid Passport. If you are going by LAND or SEA to any of hte locations then you will need a valid Government Issued Photo ID along with a birth certificate, if you are 16 or older. If you are 15 or younger than a valid birth certificate is fine. The flight rule took affect Jan 2007, the photo ID & birth certificate took affect Jan 2008. It was going to be a requirement to have a passport by Summer 2008 but that has been delayed to 2009. |

The type of ID required depends on yout method of travel.
Land - A valid Passport, OR, a government issued photo ID such as a Driver's License and an official birth certificate. If you were born outside oo the US then you should also bring your citizenship card OR a NEXUS Card (used by frequent travllers).
Sea - Same as for land
Air - A valid Passport is the only ID currently accepted for air travel into and out of the US
This is expected to shange in 2009 and either a pssport will be required or a passport card or enhanced Driver's License (still in the testing stage) |

The first two answers are incorrect. The new rules only affect entry into the US, not Canada. To get into Canada you only need a photo ID or driver's license. So, if you're an American, then your problem will come with re-entering the US rather than going into Canada. Going to the US by airplane, you will need a passport along with your driver's license/photo ID. If you are driving into the US, then you will need your driver's license and birth certificate OR passport. You are not required to have a passport yet if you are driving, but you are if you fly into the US. You will be required in the future to have a passport for driving into the US, however those rules have not gone into affect yet. |
