What would a person have to do to move to Canada? |
My father was born and raised in Canada. He came to Pa and married my mother and never went home. I have cousins up there, and I am so sick of republicans running things down here I want to move. I know how cold it gets up there so how are people staying warm? How much are your gas bills, electric, rent? On average, not rich or poor, nice neighborhood, 2 bedroom apartment. Please help or direct me to help. |

Depends on whether your father took out American citizenship or if he retained his Canadian citizenship. If the latter, you may have a claim to Canadian citizenship and that would greatly expidite your move.
In fact, Canada isn't as cold as most people think - certainly no colder than the northern States and in many places, much warmer. In Vancouver or Victoria, for example, it rarely snows - maybe one or two days per winwter, and many winters not at all. However, the Coastal mountains are high enough that there's great skiing just a few minutes from downtown Vancouver.
Rents for a 2-bedroom apartment can range from $600 - $1200 a month, depending on where you choose to live. Many people try to rent near a skytrain station (commuter rail) so they don't have to use car to commute to work, and living out in the suburbs is a little cheaper than living in the downtown area. |

How much do you know about politics and politicians in Canada? Do you suppose you will always agree with them there? Are you involved with politics locally? Or do you just complain when a party or candidates you differ with are in office? Is running away from things you do not like always your response to situations? Or do you face the situation and try to contribute to changes you want? The congress is controlled by democrats...so they control legislation for now...did you know that? If the conserative party is elected in Canada, and the liberals in the U.S. in a few years, will you hop the border again? I am just trying to get you to think things through. If you wish to have lower pay and higher taxes,( they have to pay for that "free" health care), go to Canada. You will need to apply to immigrate. I love Canada, but, the people there have political problems too..and many Canadians want to move to the U.S. If you choose to move there, it would be so much better if you went for positive reasons, not because you are running away from something here.

Like Charlie said, I'm not sure being tired of a certain politician or party is a good reason for moving to Canada. Moving to a new country, finding an apartment and a job, these are all costly things and not normally taken lightly.
Just because Republicans are "running things", all that usually means in USA is that you wait four years, then try to get the Democrats into power.
In Canada, politics are not much better. If anything, I'd say we are worse. Every politician is making various promises that they know they won't keep, and instead of just the two parties, we have at least four main ones trying to get their candidates elected (Conservatives, Liberals, New Democrats, and Bloc Quebecois) as well as a few people consider party wannabes.
I live in Quebec, one of the mainly francophone provinces, and there is always debates about whether Quebec should stay as a province in Canada or become a separate country. As a anglophone here, I often feel I am not really a Quebecer as language laws makes me a second class citizen in my own country.
Beyond that, we pay a lot of taxes to help support the universal health care system, and our roadways are falling apart because our tax dollars appear to be being spent on things other than what they should.
So there are problems everywhere. Canada is a beautiful country, but life is what you make it wherever you are. I would try to look at the good things in USA, like the freedom to go anywhere, be able to put fresh safe food on the dinner table, clean running water, and a neighborhood where you can go out with friends and complain about the government without being hauled off and put into prison for what you said. |

I live in Edmonton, AB. Here it can get as cold as -40C but I think the average in January is something like -16C. When it's really cold, you either bundle up or you stay inside. My gas bill for a small house is between $40 and $200 a month depending on the season. Average is about 100. My power bill is $90-100 a month but includes water and trash. If you live in an apt., your heat, water and trash is normally included but you might pay for the power. When I lived in an apartment, my power bill was only about $40. The people I know who rent, one of my friends just rented a big 2 br. for 950, one got a bachelor for $500 and 2 of my friends are renting a 3 br. townhouse for 1350, all of them in fairly decent neighbourhoods. |

I just moved here from the East Coast. The wether is not that bad, it all depends on where you live. Toronto is like New England weather. The summers can be hot, there is a fall and the winters are cold.
The West coast have the Seattle weather. Not really much of a winter, mostly wet and cool weather throughout the year.
People always assume Canada has artic weather throughout the yr which is not true.
The Source given by the third answerer has the application which you fill out. |

Ask you're cousins for more information.
You can move here, and live with them for a few months until u get a good paying job to buy you're own apartment or house.
It costs alot to live in toronto.
but it's a nice city.
and it doesn't get really cold, only -15 on really cold days, but mostly -4 or 5
Spring- 10 - 15 degrees
summer - 25-33 degree's.

Yes your cousins could help. Rents vary widely depending which part you are in. Toronto and Vancouver very expensive, whereas Saskatchewan and Manitoba are cheaper. Lots of jobs in Saskatchewan right now. Health care almost free (pay for dentist, prescriptions but not doc visit or hospital). Most of us survive winter! |

Don't listen to Charlie. He obviously doesn't know what hes talking about. Quoting our free health is very inappropriate. Because even if you're unemployed you still get FREE health care. And were running an election because of problems people have with the conservatives. And taxes aren't high, they're reasonable. Every tax has something important it goes towards like health care and unemployment insurance, and welfare. You can't really talk about Canada unless you've lived here for years. |
