If you hear them say "Pardons? Je ne vous comprends pas, desole!" that means they did not understand a word you said.

If they say "Ach du lieber! Sie sprechen Deutsches?", then you have found a new friend.

If they say "Va t'ens ailleurs maudit de cons!" then they are not much in to talking to you in German...

What would you do if you someone spoke chinese to you? What would you say or do? You would either answer if you understood, or say "what?" or you would try another language
Why do you think that montrealers are so strange?

Swamy
Well, it may be a slim chance but that person may reply back in German and surprise you! Else, you will either get a reply in English or French that he / she doesn't that language.

If it was me I'd answer in Hungarian, but switch to pig-latin if necessary..French. German, whatever, just smile and be friendly and see what good things happen..Bon chance..

The French Canadian language is not the same Language the French speak. You should try to practice some French while there, even if your French is the first year experience. You may want to ask for someone to practice with in German I am certain there are Canadians with German language skills there as well . Enjoy your trip.

Don't do it man! All hell would break loose and a thousand billion tons of poutine would start raining down upon the earth and bury us all. DON'T DO IT
