You need a government issued photo ID such as your valid driver's license and a birth certificate (original tho not a copy) and your SSC when traveling by land and/or sea you will definitely need a valid passport if you travel by air |

drivers license and birth certificate. they don't always ask for your birth certificate but they can so i would take it just in case
starting 2009 i heard you need a passport! |

I've only been to Canada once, years ago, and they only needed my real birth certificate (with the seal imprint). I don't think they took copies. |

Driver's license should do it (but just in case bring a copy of your birth certificate). Here is what's posted on the Department of State website:
CURRENTLY:
U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (scheduled to be in full production beginning in July 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
LATER:
On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document.
Note: The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory. |

I live right by the border (Niagara Falls) and I go there all the time.
Just in case you should bring your ssi card, Id, and birth certificate but most of the time they don't ask you for all of that stuff, just usually your id and then ask you where you are going and how long you will be in Canada, it all depends on the officer you get.
Getting back into the US is when they give you more of a hard time so yes, to be safe bring all your ids.
Soon you will be required a passport but that law did not go through yet. I know alot of people are looking at sites that claim you need it now but no, trust me not til 2009 is when they are going to push it. |

That would be good enough for now as long as you are driving. They have pushed back the passport or the new secure driver's license requirements by another year. |

You need proof of citizenship (birth certificate) which must be the original and a government issued ID (drivers license). A social security card is useless as ID. |

Honestly I don't know for sure, but even if they do let you into Canada with only those documents, you WILL likely have problems getting back to the USA without a passport. I travel to Mexico all the time and they always want to check my passport, so I assume it is the same for Canada.
But the US enacted a new law about a year ago that states that all people entering the United States from abroad (including Canada and Mexico) must have a valid passport. |

You will need a passport. Not to get into Canada but t get back into the US. This law passed in January 2008.
