-i lived in vancouver-for 8 years or so--and lived in lots of cities in canada----i left there 5 years ago to istanbul--and now i'm in china--

vancouver--is clean--very on the whole--cleaner than the east i think--

a city in the us which may be similar (in terms of cleanliness) maybe san francisco or perhaps portland(if that helps--)

is canada--cleaner than u.s--probably a bit--less people--but same first world infrastructure--less disposable(immediate) trash in cities from shops and the take aways--people (an open genralisation) seem to be a little more environmentally aware and friendly--
canadians(quite a few) pride themselves on their better environmental record compared to the us(e.g--acid rain --over niagra falls--comes from the us--)
however --alot of canada's pollution is hidden--open sewers into the ocean in vitoria b.c--and the like

moving on-
-whats it like to live there(vancouver)--its ok--becoming gentrified--gas town -used to have character and artists--now its yups and condos-

-the city and general persona of the city is a bit anal--in terms of letting go--and having fun--many street celebrations (nationl days of some ethnic group)-closed down or curfewed--

much has become or was about to move towards a more sanitized beauty , especially in the centre(robson street --kits--- west van--)--

also has a large aging population--(everyone wants to retire here)-----the poor are (or have been)squeezed into smaller and smaler areas--

the montains are nice--(and everyone tALKS ABOUT THEM)--BUT ON THE WHOLE in truth--ONLY HOLIDAYERS--OR THE AVID GO UP-THERE--not the general populace--(personally--i think mount seymour -is better than the popular grouse mountain )--however--they are very pleasing to look at--and have some very intersting stories to them--especaily the names(many to native names-and history--etc)--(but they do also trap the clouds--therefore rains quite a bit--)

stanly park is cool-especially the trails inside the park and of the main walk-you can see some of the old cuts when the place was being pioneered--some of the trunks left are huge--and its quiet and cooler and much more intersting than rollerbladers and the walking poses-)--also if you go at certain times --you can see hundreds of birds from various parts of the world--stopping there from there migration route( especaily the ducks--i never knew there was so many types of ducks--cool)

another is spanish banks is nice--the universities are really nice--especially the endowment lands--
wreck beach is cool(nudist beach) if thats something you are comfortable with---commercial drive was good--but was slowly being taken over by the condo set -and others who want and want and want---but it was still ok then--the suburbs are ok--for living--depending where you are-good streets -great bus service on the whole--

--main and hastings--is a sight to see--(the poorest postal code area in canada) right next to gas town and other such expense--(very funny funny to watch some take the left one block too early-on ther way out of gas town as they are trying to go somewhere else--downtown or china town or whwerever -and then all of sudden hit a very very different vancouver--most hit the reality of opposites in life --very fast and hard as they purvey the scenario around them-very intersting--i happen to love that area--it has character--and soul--and a strange beauty--and very good people trying to do good things for some others--my view anyway)--china town-(the block up where they should have turned left) is good) second biggest in north america( san fran--biggest)--
its a real nice place
but money helps( the library is good--really--(safdie was designer)
lots of parks
great for kids and families---
a nice place--just wish it had a bit more character --like montreal has-
so--its a very nice place--(if thats the kind of thing you want)--
it is ( i think) the kind of city it(vancouver) wants to be and seen to be--it stands out as a city--but mainly for its location--and setting--but definatly not for depth --and soul
cheers

Vancouver is not one of the cleanest cities in Canada.
Canada as a whole is much cleaner than the US.

A recent survey by Mercer (www.mercer.com) (A Human Resource Consulting firm) has rated Zurich Switzerland and Geneva Switzerland as first and second place in the world for cities with the top quality of living.
Vancouver rolled in at third place behind the Switzerland cities with a ranking of 107.7. Toronto ranked 15th this year, up one spot from last year with a ranking of 105.4.

Hey Vancouver resident here!

Well, I haven't been to the U.S. so I don't know how it is there. However I can tell you that I LOVE VANCOUVER well British Columbia that is. It's an awesome place to live... generally I think it's cleaner then US.
On the other hand it's cold, not always but it's a very beautiful weather. Lots of mountains near by and the nights simply make you awe-struck. It's a rush. You can stand somewhere and watch the world pass by. You'll get used to it, I came here 13 years ago and I never wanna move - well I was 3 then so... but I want to spend the rest of my life here. :)

Just my opinion
I just moved to the Calgary area from Colorado. While I wouldn't say it is cleaner, I do like it very much. It is much like Colorado due to the Rocky Mountains.

If you are from California OR like California, then you will love Vancouver. But watch out, is is VERRRRRRY expensive there. Makes Cali look like a poor state. Yes, it is THAT expensive.

I personally think you will find it similar to the US.....but don't tell a Canadian I said that.

It's great in Vancouver! It's a busy, fast paced city with everything at your fingertips. You're only a short drive away from the mountains AND the coast. And yes, Canada is generally cleaner than the U.S.

I've lived in both countries and I dont find Canada any cleaner, Vancouver in particular seems to be a dirty city especially the downtown core compared to San Diego where I have also lived.
