Whats life like in Saskatchewan? |
Hi I read an article in the paper stating that Saskatchewan has a very good economy and they are offering $20,000 in tuition for Ontario graduates to come there. I'm graduating this summer and I want know to know what life is like out west (for the people who reside there)
Thanks Additional Details I thought I might include that I am looking to pursue a career as a Chief, does Saskatchewan have many opportunities? and is it easy to meet people/women there? and I am aware of the very colder winters there, as much as I hate winter I would be able to handle it. Btw thank you to everyone who answered |

Think of, say Saskatoon, as like any "midsized" Ontario city. (i.e. London, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo).
The winters are cold - its not unusual for it to be -40C (without wind chill). Last winter, it didn't go above -25C for a month.
Outside of Regina and Saskatoon, there's no other cities for about a five or six hour drive (when you'd get to Calgary or Edmonton - the only other "cities" in Saskatchewan are Moose Jaw and Prince Albert, with a population of about 32,000) |

I dunno actually, I've heard they have a great economy too.
My sister moved out there a couple years ago, but her and her beau got a smokin' deal on some land. She had a hell of a time finding work, but other than that I think she's pretty happy! |

I have lived in Saskatchewan and Ontario and I find life in Regina to be much like life in a medium-sized Ontario city like Ottawa, London, Hamilton or Kitchener. One does not have the diversions of a major city like Toronto; nor does one have the inconveniences of a major city like Toronto.
Generally speaking, the people are very friendly. Saskatchewan Roughrider football is a province-wide obsession.
You'll have to learn a number of different terms. For example, there is no such thing as "Hydro"... the Crown electrical utility is the Saskatchewan Power Corp., which generates about half of its power from: the other half from dams. Saying the word "Hydro" will get you a blank look.
Nor is there provincial police, as the RCMP does provincial police work in the rural areas of Saskatchewan and cities like Saskatoon and Regina have their own municipal police forces.
Finally, there is no such thing as an "MPP". The abbreviation for "member of legislative assembly" is "MLA".
The two major political parties are the provincial New Democratic Party -- which is far more business-oriented than the NDP in Ontario --and the Saskatchewan Party, which is sort of a center of the road-business oriented party.
There are no Harvey's hamburger outlets. Balancing that, Robin's Donuts seemed to be on every street corner.
Regina looks south to the period Our airline connections for example, are to Minneapolis/St. Paul, Denver and quite possibly someday soon to Salt Lake City.
Regina does not have a professional hockey team... our mayor says that neither does Toronto! |

It's pretty exciting - you should see the show "Corner Gas". We're pretty much like that all the time. |

Saskatchewan is awesome. The summers are incredibly beautiful and hot, which really makes up for the incredibly cold winters. If you like a bit of a slower pace, then it's the place for you.
Personally, I love it. Lived in SK for 13 years and wouldn't rather be anywhere else. And yes, it seems that SK is the only place that hasn't been hit by the recession. Whenever we hear about it, we say, "what recession?" Seriously. |

Weather is bizzare. Its awefully boring, but some people like slow life.
The economy wont be bad for ever, so I wouldnt move there solely on that decision. |

The same as life here, except there it's in Saskatchewan. People breathe.....they eat......they sleep......they expel solid and liquid waste from their bodies.....and they procreate. |

If you like a life of eat, sleep, work and repeat endlessly you will love Saskatchewan. There is nothing else to do there. Also, the roads are like cow trails and if you want to go somewhere you have to drive for hours and pay a dollar a litre, or more, for gas. Also, there are a large number of Saskatchewan grads who will always get a job before you will. Read my 360 blog for more info. and some pictures of Saskatchewan life. Oh, then there is winter - if you like weeks of minus 50 with strong winds you will be happy in Saskatchewan.
There are only two cities in Saskatchewan, Regina and Saskatoon, and they have the highest crime rates in Canada according to statistics. |
