Whats montreal like... explain to fellow american?

I don't know of any Canadians let alone Quebecers that would respond positively to being called American just because they share a continent with them.

Montreal has plenty of clubs and bars on St Catherine as well as running off it. Scour through the answers here and you will find many places to go to.
There are malls downtown for shopping and the Old Port is full of nice restaurants. Have fun exploring...

Depends on the season. In summer, Montreal is far from dull. Everywhere you go, there's something interesting/exciting going on, and it's a very vibrant city. Easily the night life capital of Canada, quite possibly the night life capital of the northeast, perhaps even the night life capital of North America. Remember the drinking age here is 18, not 21.

In autumn, it starts to calm down, but it's still ok. The leaves are gorgeous, and there are still things going on.

In winter, the city kinda shuts down. Last year we got burried with some 260 cm (like 8 feet!) of snow, and people get kinda miserable and depressed. There is the "Nuit Blanche" in February, not to mention the winter carnival in Quebec city, but otherwise, Montreal is a wretched wasteland from January through April.

In spring, which is pretty much 3 weeks in late April/early May, the city starts to awaken, but is recovering from the destruction by Mother Winter, and is quite disgusting.

My conclusion: Montreal is awesome in summer, ok during fall/spring, and best avoided in winter (except maybe for the Nuit Blanche). Clubs are some of the best in the world, the women are EXTREMELY good looking, bars are abundant (if expensive), and you can shop as much as you want- if you don'T mind the steep prices (and 13,5% tax rates). Attention: people here are NOT friendly- don't expect to find any "polite" Canadians here. Oh and don't bother speaking French- or at all for that matter, becuase you'll just get rude reactions.

montreal is full of things to do, lots of students too cause theres four universities in the downtown part alone (mcgill and concordia which are english and university of montreal and uqam which are french), theres also lots of shopping on ste-catherine street and bars/restaurants/clubs on st-laurent, st-denis and mont-royal ave. theres also an old city with some attractions and restaurants and upscale shopping areas on laurier ave and sherbrooke, so theres an abundance of things to do, although the border towns on the american side have nothing to do, so i wouldnt recommend suny plattsburgh or schools in vermont if you want non-stop action.

I actually JUST came back from there today,and i absolutley adored it.
I thought it was going to be dull too, hearing several boring stories about Canada, but it's beautiful..there is really nothing like it.
Actually, it is quite european like.
My fav. spots to visit was ofcourse, downtown..
The thing I love most about Mtl, is that there is ALWAYS something
to do.
shopping-great deals, lots of shops and stores.
bars-downtown is filled with them, aswell as clubs
Some people are nice and intelligent...and others are aggressive and ignorant,just like any other city.

Overall great city, and wouldn't mind living there.

Its not a little hick town, its larger than seattle, and about the size of boston. Montreal is a world class city, with everything needed, you wont run out of things to do.

Montreal is one of the most enjoyable and multi-cultural cities in the world. The 2nd most university studenty city in the world after Boston, USA.
