Vancouver for weather, scenery, and fine local wines. But a lot of the NY-style arts screne is not [yet] there.
Toronto for NYCish business and theatre and other NY-style living in a cosmopolitan and multi-cultural (actually more multi-cultural than NYC or LA) metropolis. Probably the easiest place to get a job in your field.
Montreal if you can also communicate in French. Just as cosmopolitan (in some facets more) as Toronto, more NYC-ish intellectual and political than as Toronto, also multicultural, though a bit less than Toronto or NYC, like NYC an influential Jewish community and the Montréal bagels and pastrami are actually better (really!) though the mustard served worse, than in NYC.

To be honest with you. I've lived in Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver and I don't think either of those cities are comparable to NYC. However, those Canadian cities are great places to live and you'll enjoy the freedom.

Well, if you're looking for a city that's similar to NYC, Toronto would be a good bet, but the crime statistics are VERY high. I'd say Montreal is one of the best cities in the world, and Ottawa comes a close second!

I've been to Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver and my favorite is Vancouver. It's a beautiful location on the pacific coast and it's close to the US (Seattle) if you have to go there for some reason. The scenery is beautiful and there are lots of activities, hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, close to skiing, boating, etc. It has a laid back outdoors type of feeling unlike Montreal where the French speaking locals are not very welcoming. Go for a visit and take a city tour and then you can check out areas you are interested in. Also, I forgot to mention Stanley Park (WOW) and Granville Island (Great farmers market and lots of art gallerys). If I could I would move there.

we don't have any city that has the crime rate of NYC or the gangs or the crazy people but we are importing them as fast as we can so Toronto is your best best .

Toronto Ontario.

For you, most definately Toronto or Montreal.

I currently live in the NYC Metro Area, but I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta.

I highly recommend a move to Calgary!

Calgary has a booming economy thanks in part to Alberta's Oil Fields, Alberta Beef (the finest in North America, puts Black Angus to shame!!) and a fantastic Travel and Tourism business.

Calgary has a vast arts & theatre culture as well as a very active sports culture.

Home of the Calgary Flames (NHL), Calgary Hitmen (WHL), Calgary Royals (Jr. Hockey) and MANY MANY community rinks and plenty of opportunity for pick-up or "shinny" hockey.

If you are from NYC, you will love Toronto. Vancouver is also extremely beautiful and has great living.

Common Sense
For you, probably Toronto.

Toronto would best suit your needs. Althoigh smaller than New York, it is the Canadian city which would most be like your current home. The weather is virtually the same (there's a lake instead of an ocean), they speak english there and it would offer you all the variety of life you have in NYC. OF course, since it is Canada, there will be no red, white and blue flags draped of every building and people will say eh a lot. Suggest you start watching Second City TV DVDs and King of Kensington reruns so you can fit right in.

Simply Canadian
If you love and play ice hockey, then you need to live in the meca of Ice Hockey ---- Montreal!!!

The best city in Canada by far.

Very cosmopolitain city, with a great European flair and diverse cultures.

Although french is the main language here, english in the city is spoken by most. It may become a problem when venturing more than 100 km of the city.

If you are male - then Montreal is known for the most beautiful women in the world

If you are female - Montreal men are so charming!
