It depends on what day and what time you look along with the amount buying/selling. The markets are always going up and down.
Also, some banks/credit unions are "market linked" and so the exchange rate can literally change between when you ask a teller the current rate, and when she types in what you want. Other banks/credit unions use a daily rate. Credit cards will use the current rate along with a transaction fee. (my husband bought American money at his credit union and for $200 USD he had to pay $205. Five mins later at my bank for $200 USD, I paid $203) Same dollar rate on my credit card cost me $3 on a $60 purchase.
There are different rates for "buying" American and "selling" it too. (Buying would be what I did....I went and got American money for my trip. Selling would be taking back the money to the bank that I did not use and depositing it back into my account)
For the past week the Canadian dollar has been about $1.02 USD. (just over par)
Any bank site will give you current rates as well. |

It varies from day to day, but lately it has been close to par most of the time. Here is a link that will convert for you based on the current exchange rate. Best of luck. |

The common exchange rate is about $1.05 American for one Canadian dollar, but the brokered rates are almost equal, if not the Canadian dollar just over the American Dollar. Unless you are cashing in for say $20-200k, you are not going to get the brokered rates. You will get the common rate.
If you are about to travel to Canada, it's sometimes cheaper to convert you money at your local bank, if you call ahead. My bank requires a week's notice. It's far better than what you get at the exchange desk at the airport, or at the Canadian banks. Credit cards can get you around this, but they still charge a small percentage for the conversion. |
