Niagara refers generally to the region in which Niagara Falls is located (the Niagara Region). It can also refer to the river that bisects the United States and Canada. It may also refer to the town of Niagara-on-the-Lakes in Ontario, or the Niagara Escarpment or the Niagara Peninsula.

Niagara Falls refers specifically to either the cities (one in Ontario, the other in New York) or the geographic feature of the falls itself. Sometimes it may simply be called "the Falls."

These terms are used in a number of different ways. Locally however "Niagara Falls" refers either to the geographic feature (the falls of the Niagara River) or to the City of Niagara Falls. Niagara usually means the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, a much smaller community located downriver where the Niagara River empties into Lake Ontario.

Niagara is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,978. The town is named after the famous, local waterfall.

The Town of Niagara is the neighbor to the City of Niagara Falls, which actually adjoins the famed Niagara Falls cataract. The town is located in the southwest corner of the county and is famed for its factory outlet mall (formerly Prime Outlet Niagara Falls), frequently visited by nearby Canadians based on the favorable currency exchange.

There is no separate post office, so the mailing address is still "Niagara Falls, NY" NOT "Niagara, NY".

And of course Niagara Falls are water falls on the Niagra river.
