except at that one little border crossing in Maine where anyone at anytime cancross and no one knows about it and I guess no one cares. The news media was all over that fact for the last couple of years. You are supposed to stop and call in to someone and tell them you are crossing. As if ..... |

Yes, your license plate is entered on a computer as soon as you cross. Your ID is also entered. That information is available to both countries. |

Not always.
E.g. a Canadian citizen drives into Canada with a vehicle registered in the USA.
Under Canadian law, Canadian customs can levy an import tax or in some cases confiscate the car (say it is a rental car with USA plates) on the car unless the Canadian citizen is a legal resident of the USA. The Canadian citizens is allowed in, but given X number of days to take the vehicle out of Canada. Otherwise Canada will consider the vehicle as imported and demand taxes. The customs guy at the border will provide a form that must be given to Canada customs when leaving the country.
What if one forgets to do that? Canada customers sends a notice to the Canadian's USA address demanding the form.
Ergo, Canada Customs has no clue you have crossed the border. |
