Canada does not have an "independence day." Canada Day, which is essentially Canada's birthday, is July 1st. It celebrates the joining of the British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the "Province of Canada" (which at that point consisted of Ontario and Quebec) which occurred on July 1st, 1867. Although Canada became a kingdom in its own right, it still had limited political power, with most of that residing with the British crown. That power has been "given back" to Canada over the decades with the eventual patriation of the Canadian constitution in 1982.

it started as Dominion Day in 1879.

Since 1958, the government has arranged for an annual observance of Canada's national day.
