When does it start snowing in British columbia Rockies?

I plan to drive through the mountains around November 15. I figure it may be snowing at high elevations. Just wanted some input as to what to expect. What is normal for that time of year?

There is a definite possibility that you will run into some snow in November, and the peaks will likely be snowpacked. The conditions vary widely and it's really difficult to predict, especially at that time. You could have fine weather or you could end up in a snow storm. I suggest that you prepare for the worst, i.e. snow tires, traction aid, candles, boots and other warm weather gear. Of course once your out of the mountains, you might need shorts and tee's! Good luck.

Agreeing with Andy here. We've had snowstorms in September but that's rare.

Usually by November there is snow at the higher elevations at the very least. Often there will be some snow down lower as well.

Bob D
Most of the higher peaks are snow covered year round, within reason and snow in the passes is quite common in September and virtually guaranteed in October. By november for sure. You have received some good advice, tire chains, a candle, a few munchies and a charged up cell phone will definitely help as well. Worst of the passes have pull out areas, usually near some sort of accommodation so if you don't feel comfortable driving on, stop and wait for a break in the snow or if you must go on, wait for a truck or 2 and follow them. Take your time and with a good set of winter tires, you shouldn't have a problem.

Everyone else has given good answers. Aside from snow, watch for black ice which can show up when it has snowed, melted a bit onto the road, and frozen again. Unless you're in a big hurry, I'd recommend starting to drive after the sun has come up enough to melt it back to water, and getting off the road before it freezes again in late afternoon. Also beware when you drive on a piece of road that hasn't had sun yet even if it's sunny outside. Check road reports and weather before you leave, too.

Rowan
it starts snowing lightly around september. it snows all year round at the highest peaks (above 2500 metres). so theyll deffinitely be snow at the higher elevations and probolbly lower as well. (1000 metres or 3000 feet). and theres a slight possibillity of it snowing at ground level. bring winter clothing.

its unanimous I guess. One thing I would add is that iF YOUR RENTING A CAR from budget, national, alamo whatever THEY DO NOT PROVIDE SNOW TIRES!! Crazy but true. They usually do have newer decent four season radials on though and have crossed Vancouver/Edmonton/Calgary many times on all seasons in the winter but be aware of what you have on. . As long as your sticking to the main highways (Hwy#1/ Hwy#5) you should be okay. If going Vancouver to Okanagan avoid Hwy#3 between Hope and Penticton in winter although looks temptingly short on a map.. If your going Vancouver to Okanagan (kelowna, penticton) take HwY#1 to Hope then Hwy#5 to Merritt and then 97C to Kelowna area.

Lisa
Where are you driving from/to? If you are considering Hwy #3 at some point on your trip, I agree with the person who said to avoid it, if it's snowy. It does look short on a map but it is a 2-lane highway most of the way (1 each direction) and it is quite twisty and can be scary in bad weather! YOU might be a safe driver with snow tires/chains but not everyone else is prepared - and a lot of semis drive this route as well.

It is, however, a very scenic drive and I would recommend it if it's not snowy!

Ransomed
Definitely expect snow at that time, esp. in the higher elevations. Bring a good map and compass, extra warm/thermal clothes and shoes, flares and chains and high carb foods in case of emergency. Depending on where you'll be, temps can drop to below 0 easily. Remember to call your destination when you leave and if possible, along the way, in case you don't reach there at an appropriate time so they can send out the troops. BTW, have a great time ;)
