When driving across the border, will my husband and I need a passport? |
My husband and I will be driving in the northern part of the U.S.... and one point of our road trip will make for a shorter jaunt if we pass through Canada. Would we need to have passports with us? Or would our driver's licenses be adequate for passage in and out of the country?

I just returned from Ontario. We crossed at the Peace Bridge Buffalo/Ft. Erie. A passport is not required, but as of right now, it will be in Jan. 2007. That may change.
They will ask for a photo ID and you need to have either a voter's registration card or birth certificate as back-up. We usually get asked for the birth certificates on the way back into the US not on the way into Canada. |

Everyone here is basically correct.
You don't need a passport as you can use your birth certificate and drivers license, but it is getting harder to cross the border and more people are asking for passports.
I also heard that this will come into effect January1, 2007, but I don't think that's been verified yet. Canadians will have to have a passport to get into the U.S. as well at that time. |

If you are both United States citizens, you will only need your driver's license and some other form of US ID, like an insurance card. If you are here on Visas, you'll need your passports. |

Just went to Toronto, and we needed our Birth certificates and an ID. There are rumors about needing a passport to get thru cause borders are tightening up. But as far as I know...nothing yet. |
