Although it is true that the Queen is only a symbolic head of state, that symbolism is loaded with negative side effects.
First of all, it symbolizes Canadians' colonial mentality. Canadians seem to think that they need to be controlled by others. This mentality has concrete manifestations in our economy which is massively dominated by non-Canadian corporations. Those corporations first loyalties do not lie with Canada (witness US Steel - formerly Stelco - and GM & Chrysler).
Second, the Queen represents the notion that Canada is essentially a British country and that those of us who are not of British origin are not really Canadian. Ridiculous as this Orange Lodge idea is, it still finds supporters in many quarters. The fact that new citizens are forced to swear allegiance to Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors instead of to Canada is a sign of this notion at work.
I personally will not feel at home in this country (my country of birth) until Canada has its own head of state. |

I like the Queen. Leave it be, there's bigger things to worry about. |

canada essentially became a republic officially on the repatriatian of the constititution in 1980s. Although we still maintain a symbolic monarchy it doesnt figure into the country's power structure in any meaningful capacity.
If you are wondering about our government arrangements for voting etc basically, the vested interests namely Libs and Conservative parties who are in power have no desire or motivation to open things up to "rep by pecentage of party vote" or other such "nonsense". |

When are people going to stop whining about things that don't matter on the grader scale? The Head of State position is a ceremonial one.........why bother with the money and the rig amoral involved in having an election for it....
I, for one, rather like Canada's governmental system. Sure its not perfect, but its much better than our neighbours to the South, and many other dictatorship countries. |

Okay, so Canada elects its own head of state...how will that change what we have now?
Canada is a parliamentary democracy with the Queen as the head of state. So what? |

Queen Elizabeth is a nice little old lady...In my opinion she can stay till she goes.....but I will be dammed if I am going to look down at my twenty dollar bill and see Prince Charles face on it....if we do not change our head of state to an all Canadian one whether that be an appointed GG or elected president when QEII departs and make that official by some written decree...then I will have lost all hope for Canada ever growing up.....
To be a truly independent and strong nation then we MUST have a Canadian head of state.... |

I don't think anything will happen as long as QEII is alive but afterwards i would think some kind of change would happen |

Within 5 years after the death of Queen Elizabeth 2. The public opinion of Charles is very low.
Now, only if a group of Canadian politicians have the gall to get knee deep in Constitutional talks.
Until then we are a constitutional monarchy.

Our parliamentary system works! |

Did someone respond saying let it be, that there are bigger things to worry about? With that sort of do-nothing attitude we would not have our distinctive Maple Leaf flag, our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, or our National anthem.
Canada is going to become a free republic when the people rise up and demand a Canadian head of state. How would you like your member of parliament to be the same member of parliament for 16 other ridings? We would never tolerate such nonsense. Why are we tolerating it for our current off-shore, foreign head of state?
C'on Canadians rise up and fight for our own identity, eh. |

As you said, the monarchy in Canada is not symbolic and Canada needs to be changed into a republic of Canada. I believe two things is a prerequisite of that change to happen:
1) Awareness among Canadians that if they need to have an identity and respect for themselves internationally, they need to detach themselves completely from Britain.
2) Awareness among Quebecois people, that instead of separatist movements, an alternative would be to have a free and democratic country that the head of state would be chosen directly by the vote of people. |

For all you Queen lovers please move to the country where she lives. Our present Queen is actually a half black french TV reporter. If this all sounds insanely archaic it's because it should have ended in the 18th Century if not sooner. FOR THE REPUBLIC!!! |

When we the people fight hard enough. Until then, we are not a republic but a colony. The Queen is still our head of state. We must fight long and hard for the good of the people, for Canada must be liberated! Anyone who opposes this must either accept this fact or move to Britain so they can live with the Queen at a far closer distance. Ignore the monarchists for they'll come up with any empty excuse to preserve British dominance and colonial division. |
