Canada Day is celebrated on July 1st. If it falls on a Sunday, the next day is considered a legal holiday. Canada Day is a statutory holiday throughout Canada. In Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada Day is also known as Memorial Day.Canada Day was established by statute in 1879, under the name Dominion Day. It is a commemoration of the day in 1867 that the first colonies of British North America entered Confederation as the Dominion of Canada.Other names used in the past for Canada Day include: First of July, July the First, Confederation Day, and Dominion Day. On October 27, 1982, July 1st, then known as "Dominion Day", was decreed by Parliament to be known as "Canada Day".Canada Day is celebrated with barbecues, parades, music, and of course fireworks in the evening.

Our national holiday is 1 Jul each year. It's Canada Day and it celebrates the anniversary of the July 1, 1867 enactment of the British North America Act of 1867, which united Canada as a single country of four provinces.

As to what someones most important holiday second to Christmas Day is, I think that all depends upon your perspective. To many, Christmas Day is not a big deal therefore it wouldn't be their most important holiday. I have many Jewish friends who observe Hanukkah, Muslim friends who observe Eid Al-Fitr and/or Eid Al-Adha and even a few Hindu friends who like to observe Holi here in Canada so for them any of those may be their most important holiday.

.
Canada Day, July 1...it's the date of confederation in 1867, not independance, that was granted by the crown...

Canada Day is July 1st.

I imagine the "importance" of a Holiday depends on who is celebrating it. I'd say Easter is the second most important holiday just because schools are closed for two days & all the kids enjoy that whether or not they actually celebrate Easter.

July 1st is Canada day.Every one has there own special holiday and depends on each Canadian. For me it`s Victoria day,or what it`s more known as the May two-four weekend. It`s considered the first long weekend of summer. For us Canadians it`s something we really look forward to especially if we had a long cold winter. For many people its the biggest party weekend of the year.Canada day and Victoria day are the only holidays were they let off fireworks across the country.

July 1st is Canada Day, celebrating Canada's confederation, I stand corrected, in 1867.
It was originally known as Dominion Day.

Remembrance Day on November 11 is of major importance, though it's not a celebration.

Alexander Keith's birthday, the major holiday in Nova Scotia, is October 5.

since everyone handled Canada day for ya, I'm going to chime in and say Easter is utterly the LEAST important holiday on the calendar to me. Yeah, maybe you get more time off, but that's just because the holiday claimed three days for itself. And it's religious, so the government has to give you time off, or they would be insensitive. If you're not religious you just don't go to school. And maybe eat a lot of chocolate. Not a big deal in hearts and minds. As far as people making a big deal out of it, and celebrating, I think Halloween is probably a bigger deal to most people.

July 1 is Canada Day.

The second most important holiday besides Christmas is probably Easter. We get time off at both holidays (which pretty much everyone takes regardless of their personal beliefs).
