Oh my......Ok....I'll try and answer 400 years of history here! *lol*
13 Colonies established by Britain !
Lower Canada established by France ! (John Cabot 1541)
Colonies rebel against Britain and become the U.S.A ! (American Revolution )
France still has a Colony in what is now Canada !
Loyalists to Britain "living in the 13 Colonies" flee to Canada !
U.S.A attacks the French ( Canada )and looses ! (7 years war and war of 1812 and French Indian wars )
Britain who now has "no interests in the New World whatsoever ( loss of the 13 Colonies ) attacks the French (Canada ) who are out of food and muskets and Cannon Balls from fighting the U.S.A and wins ! ("Wolfe" is the English General and "Montcalm" is the French General..on the Plains of Abraham )! It is reasoned out eventually that the French will occupy Lower Canada (Quebec) and the British will occupy Upper Canada (Ontario)! Ta Da.....The start of Canada !
You should note that the words Upper and Lower are based on the flow of the St. Lawrence River...you would go up river to Ontario as rivers flow generally down to the ocean ! Newtons law of gravity ! *S*
Therefore my young American Friend that is how our two great countries came to be in a rather simplified explanation ...Canada is Canada and The U.S.A is the U.S.A..period ! *S*
A rather simple explanation of extremely interesting part of the History of the New World !
Incidently the Spanish established the area's around Texas and Mexico and furthur South of course....see that History ! (Alamo for example !)
....and I may as well add this, the "America's" were named after the Italian explorer "Amerigo VespuccI".....and I note that people from the U.S.A refer to themselves as "Americans" whereas everyone in North, Central and South America are in essence "Americans"...such as anyone in Germany or Switzerland or Britain or France etc. etc. are referred to as Europeans ! Canada however prefers the word "Canadian" and the U.S.A. prefers "American" *S*
Hope that helps a bit ! *S*

Jim B...."Hi"! Yes ,you are quite correct and I Thank-you Sir ! As I said this was just a "quickie" history lesson so appreciate your comments ! *S*
As concerns Victoria and Vancouver Island..yes there were some interesting events between Vancouver Island as a Colony and the then known "Territory of Washington"!
Thanks Jim B ! *S* |

Micheal C :
BRAVO sir, well done.
A small quibble though................After the defeat of the French , in 1759 at Quebec City. the British were the masters of both Upper and Lower Canada, BUT the French were allowed to retain their language, religion, and to elect their own legislators. A very decent deal compared to what other vanquished nations got in those days.
The expulsion of the Acadians , to Louisiana, ( where they became known as Cajuns ) was a measure to head off a smouldering insurrection , in the Gaspe and lower Nova Scotia.
To the original asker..............
The western portion of the International Boundary, from Lake of the Woods, westwards, to the Pacific coast, was not fully surveyed untill 1870. There were still a number of local border disputes into the 20th century.

Yeah, its because Canadians aren't traitors and decided to fight for the British crown instead of the Colonists.... |

We both got to the same place, seperate distinct countries, only USA route there involved bloodshed, hard ship and sorrow....
======like any good (and favourite) kid, all we did was had to ask.

its not all one country due to the colonization of the 1600 and 1700's. the first united states was a collection of british colonies that broke away from the crown. after the american revolution was won the 13 original colonies formed their own country. remember that north america as we know it was colonized by the british, french and spanish. |

canada used to have very harsh resident restrictions...in fact, sometimes you couldn't even visit unless you can prove you are already solvent, in other words, if you were flat broke they wouldn't even let you in....meanwhile, USA was letting in anyone who wanted to come..... |
