When visiting Niagara Falls, Canada, do I have to exchange my money?

Just curious. I went in 1998 with my family and some places had prices for American and Canadian money. I know you have to in the casino but what about the museums and stuff like that?

Many businesses in the Niagara Falls area will accept both Canadian and U.S. currency. However, there are some things to keep in mind when paying in U.S. cash.

First of all, most Canadian ATM's will not give you U.S. cash. You'd need to go to the actual bank to do that, and they may charge a hefty service fee for this.

While businesses can and do accept U.S. money for payment, they probably won't give U.S. change, and there's absolutely nothing that requires them to.

Also, businesses that do accept U.S. money probably won't be giving a good exchange rate. The banks and casino will have the best rates; currency exchange booths and local businesses should be avoided for this.

My advice would be to change over some of your money to Canadian currency prior to coming across, and using your credit card for larger purchases (big shopping trips, hotels, etc.).

Usually not - you should be able to use American or Canadian - they are very use to it.

I went about a year ago. Almost everywhere we went did the conversion automatically and even gave change in US money. They are very used to it (although you might get a better exchange rate by changing your money first, the few extra cents you save isn't really worth the hassle). Make sure to visit the butterfly house . Have fun, there is a lot to do there (very touristy), avoid Denny's (the tax rate on american business makes the meal expensive there, a Grand slam breakfast is about 9 dollars)

I used to live there. Usually most places accept American money because the US is right across the falls. If you ever do need to excahnge money then go to the Exchange/Duty Free place across the street from the Hershey's Factory, next to the Rainbow bridge, or the Casino. The casino will probably give you a better exchange rate.

Niagara Falls is very tourist oriented. Many places will charge you the U.S. equivalent.

Some Canadian restaurants and stores will accept US funds, especially the ones in the tourist areas. However, don't expect a good exchange rate on it.

My advice would be to use a credit card or bank ATM card wherever possible, since the credit card company or bank should provide you with the daily exchange rate plus a percentage point or two more for their troubles.

Canadian bank machines accept cash withdrawals as part of the Interac or Plus system. Most restaurants, hotels, and department stores will accept Visa or Mastercard. Some accept American Express and/or Diner's Club.
