In 1867 - right after the Americans finished killing themselves in their Civil War (which was a little more than 50 years after we booted them out of Canada for the last time.) Anyway, after....dahling... after..
(Funny looking at that...how can a war ever be called civil?)
We've had over 140 peaceful birthdays ever since. We call it Canada Day on July 1st. Before 1967, it was called Dominion Day (when Canada was formally a Dominion of the British Empire.)
Prior to 1841, two of the colonies which eventually created the Country of Canada were called Upper Canada (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec). In 1841, these 2 colonies were combined to form the Province of Canada. So the name Canada was in general use many years before the country of Canada was born in 1867. |
