Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

January 2008 by Land.

January 2007 by Air.

I had been using my passport since last year instead of my citizenship card.

Hi - you won't need a passport to get into Canada, just to get into the States. We're happy enough if you are polite and say 'please' :) As for the USA laws, there is a reprieve and not until Jan 08.

"The passport law takes effect Jan. 1 2007. After that date you will need a passport to lenter the United States. Unless you cross the border illegally then you can stay forever and get welfare money to support your family back home. "

you wish.....I'd rather be a Canadian than an American any day......like we'd want your welfare money. save it and give it to the Iraq vets you screw over on VA benefits....way to say "Thanks for Serving, suckers!!!"

you ALWAYS need a passport for crossing the canadian border by land, regardless if it is this coming year or the next!
