Where's a good place to relocate to in Canada?

Hi there,

My husband and I are currently expecting our first baby, and our lease will be up by the time she's 6 months old or so. His work has transfer opportunities nearly everywhere in Canada and we think it's time for a change. We've been living in south-western Ontario for some time now - the Kitchener/Waterloo region to be exact and it's not really a place we'd like to settle down.

What sort of places would be good for a young family looking for a good place to raise children? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

There are plenty of great places to live in Canada. One of my personal favorite is Langley, BC not far at all from Vancouver, BC. I moved here from London, Ontario after I had my son. We actually plan on buying a house this year in Langley or Cloverdale (cloverdale is right next door to langley).

My favorite things about the Greater Vancouver Area and Langley, BC in particular are that there are an abudnance of things to do. Not to mention an abudnance of things to do with your child. Things that are nice about the Greater Vancouver Area in general are:

You can spend the day hiking in the beautiful mountains, which you can see from almost anywhere you are in the city. You can go swimming in the ocean or the many lakes that BC has to offer. Your in the thick of natural beauty. If you like skiing in the winter whistler is not far away and provides some wonderful skiing/snoboarding. If the outdoors are not your thing, thats ok. We have rodeos in the summer, events going on at the general motors place, hockey games, cfl football games, science world, the aquarium, stanley park, the zoo and so much more. You can't not have something to do in the Vancouver area regardless of what your idea of a good time is.

Langley, BC is a place I would call home anyday. Its a perfect family environment. It has everything you could ever need to raise your children. Its quiet, but its still a city. Plenty of parks for you to bring your daughter to. Rec. Centers that offer things for you and your daughter to do throughout the city. Everything you could ever need is located along 200th st. So it makes getting to what you need convenient. I can walk anywhere I need to go in Langley, which I love. I couldn't imagine raising my kids anywhere else. One thing that impressed/surprised me was this rec. guide they send around with things of all ages can do. My son is 3yrs old and is enrolled in a soccer program. My daughter 18 months has a dance class she attends. Throughout the week we have a combination of things we do. Twice a week we go to the rec. center for a play group with a bunch of other moms with kids all under 3yrs old. They have a strong start program where you can enter your daughter into at roughly 2yrs. Its a more structured play group. The local library has reading times for the little ones to attend. There are tons of mom groups. I attend one and a couple times a week we will do things like go to the park and spend the morning or go to a kid friendly place that has a gym area, or even go out for coffee. When I was new here, they were all very welcoming. The people were extremely friendly.

I would imagine if your husband has an opportunity to transfer out this way it would be located in Vancouver area. The nice thing about Langley is its within commuting distance. You can download Google Earth if you already havent. It gives you a good idea of different areas you might consider all over Canada.

You can check out the rec center guide hre as well as all the visitor websites langley has to offer:
http://www.city.langley.bc.ca

Vancouver BC City Website:
http://vancouver.ca/

If you need to find a family doctor you can do a search here for BC
https://www.cpsbc.ca/node/216

If you are considering the Vancouver area or do end up deciding on the area send me an email. I can give you some more information if you need it. Also, if you do decide on the Vancouver area or even Langley I would be more then happy to send you the information or show you around to a few of the mom spots or mommy groups/play groups. Best of luck on your decision =)

Bob D is right.

I have a two year plan to get out of this concrete jungle of the GTA and move out east where the air is cleaner, where the word rush hour doesn't exist and life is simpler. Its a beautiful place to raise a family and to live. Lots to do and low expense. God I wish I was there right now.

Some beautiful places near the water within an easy 1/2 hour commute of Moncton, New Brunswick for well under $200,000. Moncton has been growing steadily for years and is less than 2 1/2 hours to Halifax, 1 hour to PEI, about a 10 hour drive to Montreal and an easy days drive to New York or Boston. Great hospitals, friendly people, awesome schools. Try mls.ca, click on Moncton and area and check out real estate prices for yourself, tourism N.B. and PEI. Nova Scotia all have great sites for photos. Best wishes in your move, we moved our boys from B.C. to here back in 1997, 2 youngest are now fluently bilingual and go to a nearby French school, best thing for them and we have no regrets either...

I would move to Ottawa because it is generally regarded to be one of the safest and cleanest cities in the world and is a city of great neighbourhoods and parks. The best city to raise children.

The Vancouver or Lower Mainland area would be great - so would the Okanagan. It really depends on what you want to do and what kind of venue you enjoy. Big city, small city, near the water, near the mountains, etc.etc.

I live in Toronto and I think its great. Its sooo diverse! You meet people from all over the world, and there are areas downtown like Chinatown, Little Italy, Greektown, and more (I just can't remember them all right now). =]

i have heard the best place to live in is calgary...apparently the recession wasnt as noticable there as it was in other parts of canada

Adrian. "The sexy Canadian&
Victoria is a popular destination. It's in BC if you didn't know and its a great place to live. Also White Rock if you have the money in a suburb just outside of Vancouver. I can only give you a good resume of places in BC for that is the only place I have lived before moving to Ontario. If you are interested in moving to BC stay away from Surrey/Vancouver and walley for they are Gang hot spots
