On the fence

Where's safer, New York or Toronto?

I recently visited New York and found it, in the day, to be a very safe place to walk around alone, especially Manhattan. Obviously, there are some high-crime/risk areas but these seem mostly to be fairly far off areas that most tourists would have no interest in visiting anyway. I'm interested to know how Toronto compares to New York in as much as safety?

In the main areas of Toronto, how safe is it for an 18 year old male to walk around alone, is there much chance of mugging/random attacks in the day?

Thanks

I live in New York City and I have relatives who live in Toronto (well, they live in Burlington but I've been to Toronto many times) so I'm familiar with both cities. Toronto and New York are both safe cities for tourists. A lot of people believe New York City is a dangerous place, but the reality is, New York City is one of the safest cities in America. It always ranks well on the crime statistics for large cities in the United States, but as a result of the high crime in the 70's, a lot of people still believe it's a dangerous place. Mayor Guliani and Bloomburg have cleaned up most of the city and reduced crime a lot, most of the crime in NYC these days stays in certain areas of the Bronx or Harlem, mostly gang related, but even there crime has been reduced. In NYC, you will see police cars everywhere, which certainly makes me feel safe, the NYPD is one of the most effective police forces in any city I’ve ever been to. For a city of over 10 million people, it’s a very safe place.

As for Toronto, it’s safe in almost all areas. The only dangerous areas I know of is Scarborough and Jane and Finch, but there’s no reason why a tourist would need to be in that area and most of the crime in those areas is gang related (similar to crime in NYC). Some areas of Toronto get very quiet at night, so you might want to be careful if you’re in an area like that at night and walking alone. When in any large city you’re unfamiliar with at night, you should stay on the main roads that are well lighted. My relatives have told me crime has been on the rise in Toronto, but again it’s mostly gang related, it’s not like it’s random shootings at anyone who walks by. Both cities are safe, as long as you use common sense, you'll be fine. Enjoy your trip =)

Manhattan is tame, it just holds the stigma from the 60s-70s.

My experiences in Toronto were fine, I didn't feel uncomfortable. And being an 18 year old male... if you keep your wits about you and stay street smart you should be fine.

I am Canadian, but have been to both Toronto and New York City more than once.
In my opinion, they are both the same, large teeming cities with diverse cultures and populations. In both cities, I believe, violence is fueled by drugs and gangs, so certain areas are more prone to crime. A lot of it comes down to being in the wrong place at the wrong time, if you are an innocent bystander. You can just as easily get shot, or not get shot, on Yonge Street as in Times Square.
20 years ago I would have said Toronto was by far the safer city, but with NYC cleaning up its act, and Toronto seeming to get more violent, I think they are about the same. As a
Canadian, it hurts me to say that, but it's true. Just my opinion, though.

Toronto is pretty much the same, day time i never feel uncomfortable anywhere. night time, depends on the area. most are fine, downtown is fine. MOST of the attacks in toronto arent random.
im 19, female, live downtown bymyself.. walk home from work alone at 3 am and feel fine.

The day, the roads are busy and there are always those people (normal pedestrians) on the look. You will feel safe.

Somewhere I Belong's duck
Toronto. But I have a massive bias that I am not even going to attempt to cover up.

-- My technique is to walk really, really fast even if I have absolutely no idea where I am going. Which doesn't happen much because I live there. But I do get lost sometimes if I am going like into Mississauga and I just walk really, really fast.

Toronto is pretty safe to me they also have there dangerouse streets which are Jane and Finch thats where most of the crimes occure, so just try to avoide that area and i'm sure you will be fine. I personaly think that Toronto is a safer place because it has a smaller population the New York and there is less-people so less criminals. Thats the way I see it! Just stay off the streets above gangster area...:) Anyways hmm not so much of a chance really...theres a lot of people around you some random person is not going to pop out of nowhere and attake you for no particular reason at all. Make sure as a tourrist that you make sure it LOOKS as though you know where your going if you don't. If you look lost then you would be an easy target. Especialy in the main areas of town theres much less of a chance. They usually would go for someone whos walking alone on a not so busy street at night time. So they don't have anyone watching them in the process. Thats all the advice i got for you - anyways good luck should be Fine!

manno
if it's "meant to be"... it will happen to you in Toronto, New York, or wherever you are... accept this and don't be too worried about what could happen!!

dani
Ive lived in New York all my life and havent had any problem with crime.
