Where's the best place to get American Dollars exchanged for Canadian Dollars?

I'm going to montreal in a few days and was wondering where the best place to get money exchanged for the best rate. I know the airport does it, but normally they take a higher percentage than other places so you don't get the best rate. Just want to know if any of you know of any other places to get money exchanged (specifically in Montreal). Thanks!

Go to a large bank that has an international currency counter. Try a bank where you have an account -- they will often waive the fee for bank members. Hotels frequently provide currency, depending upon the size of the hotel and it's location. I think that there are American Express offices world-wide that will also do currency conversion, but I believe that they also charge high rates. Do you have credit cards? Credit card companies often provide "best currency rate for the billing period" type of exchange rates, so... if you use your CC you will only pay the best rate for the period in which you charged. Have fun!

Barkley Hound
ATM's normally have the best rates. Check with your bank to find out which one you can use.

yes when you get to Montreal, go down town Montreal on saint Catherin street it is the big and main street in down town Montreal beside others but this is the best place to find good rate for your money. the weather is nice down their in this time just take a walk down town and keep your eye open their is plenty of stores for money exchange good luck and have fun. and for more fun go to crescent street

Mystee_Rain
One of those check cashing places, they charge less than a bank
or YOUR bank if you have an account, then you won't have to pay a fee

jmprince01
probably any bank. or, *Sometimes*, businesses will accept American dollars, but give you Canadian change.

Tea C
I have always found that my local bank gives me the best exchange rate for a the dollar. My bank does not charge a fee if you buy at least $ l.000.-- in foreign money.Have fun in Montreal.

canadian_sweetgal
you can usually just use your bank card/ATM and withdraw money that way as well.

Pcow
almost every store in canada takes Us money and alot of them dont know the exchange rate is almost even so they usualy charge you 80% of the cost when realy its about 95% getting it exchanged costs time and money you can always walk in to a store and ask if they can break your bill for you and get you 100's broken down in to canadian currency free

Believe In Dreams
I thought everywhere you went the rate was the same ..... I've been conned i tell you!! No seriously i didn't know it varied.

Lynn
