Where can I find a good sandy beach for swimming that is close to Toronto, ON?

Must be clean. Not rocky. Safe for kids.
Not freezing. Sandy.

Your best bet is to go over to Centre Island and Hanlans Point. Check first because they close beaches all over the Toronto lakefront because of e-coli. All beaches are tested daily.

Another vote for Wasaga Beach.

It's a long stretch of smooth sand. Lots of shallow areas for wading in addition to the swimming.

It's a "beach town" so has your usual shops, ice cream joints and amusement section as well. On top of which , it's straight up Highway 400 so, although it's about an hour away (to the best of my recollection) it's a fast and easy drive except on Friday nights/Saturday mornings when all the cottagers are on the road.

Nickel beach Port Colborne, 1.5 hours away

Go to Wasaga beach. This is one of the largest Fresh Water Beaches in the world and about a 1 hour drive.

DO NOT GO IN LAKE ONTARIO. YOU WILL GROW NEW BODY PARTS.

There are lots of beaches right in Toronto, but as suggested, check with Public Health as to which are open or closed. There are signs on the beaches if you want to just go and check. If you are not going into the water, the sand is still available for sunbathing. I understand the only nude beach in Toronto is over on the islands but that may have been abandoned due to lack of interest.

Be warned, if the lake is open it will be about 5 degrees above freezing while the sand will be about 5 degrees below boiling. The kids will probably tolerate the cold water better than you. I don't recall it being that bad when I was a kid.
