Surrey is less expensive, but pretty far out, and people seem to hate it. Burnaby is a better option, and the public transit can get you downtown fast. The east side of Vancouver tends to be much less expensive as well, but is iffy in some areas.
Richmond is also a possibility. You're close to the airport, but it's pretty far out. However, they're opening a new Skytrain extension which will go through there next year, so it's worth a look.

Maybe???

Vancouver is extremely expensive; even the suburbs are becoming unaffordable, which is why many people are now moving to outlying cities such as Abbotsford and Chilliwack.(1 1/2 and 2 hours away respectively).
Downtown apartments go for $1250 per month for a small 1 bedroom(less than 500 square feet to over $4000 for a penthouse suite.
Except the downtown east side, the rest of Vancouver is catching up to the downtown core.

Stay at one of the weekly stay motels on Kingsway. Then once you find jobs, live somewhere so you do NOT have to cross a bridge to get to work. As well, by then you will be more familiar with the places you might want to live.

Also, there is no "not expensive" in Vancouver until you go east to Aldergrove or Abbotsford.

Try Coquitlam or Port Moody they are fairly close to Vancouver not as expensive and a lot more peaceful.
