Where in bristish Columbia is the best place to live? |
As I mention in my first question, we just can't stand the snow and the cold anymore.. however, we also would like to grow up our little girl in a nice area. A Place where she will be safe (I know hard to ask for but there must be a place in BC where it's safe. I am also hoping to get a transfer from my current job out there. I work for the phone company here. So I just need ask for a transfer..

If you don't like snow and cold, your best bet is to opt for somewhere in the Lower Mainland or Vancouver Island.
Is it dark most of the time? No. It's the same as Calgary as far as hours of daylight go. How often does it rain? There is a rainy season - usually October, November, and sometimes December. Jan, Feb, Mar are usually clear and cool, April showers bring May flowers and then it's summertime, which is beautiful on the coast - not as hot as Calgary, nor as humid. |

If you want sun then you might be better off in the southern Interior. Some place like the Okanagan Valley (e.g. Kelowna). |

Maybe???

Sechelt is a wonderful, beautiful, small and safe city on the Sunshine Coast. Victoria has really changed a lot since I left there. It was a nice city when I lived there about 20 years ago.
I visited my friend there in the fall last year, and the feeling I got was that of a small city becoming a big modern city. Most of the beautiful tourist attractions have been destroyed, or are no longer accessible, such as "Anne Hathaway's Cottage".
Being on the west coast, we get more sun and rain than Calgary. |

Vancouver Island is a beautiful place, with many smaller communities. The west side of Vancouver island rains A LOT. The east side (where most of the towns and cities are) is much dryer. Victoria (the capital of the province) is a very nice city, but the downtown part has some problems with crime. Of course one could argue that with the Legislature buildings in Victoria, Victoria holds a large number of criminals whenever the house sits.. ha ha...
Vancouver has high crime, and a big problem with drug trafficing. BUT this does not mean that every single person in the lower mainland deals with crime on a daily basis. There are areas that will naturally have more crime - I think the statistics are that if you live within a mile radius of a skytrain station, crime stats go up quite dramatically. and it rains. A LOT.
If you looked at one of the many smaller communities, like Kamloops (very dry), Kelowna, Penticton, Trail, etc., you will find some lovely communities.. but as with any community, there will be areas within the towns and cities that are not as safe as others.
But one think I would have to question - considering the higher cost of living within BC (read: provincial sales tax) and the fact that you seem to enjoy Calgary's weather - why move? |

I loved the North Coast when I was transfered out there a long time ago Prince Rupert gets some snow and lots of freezing rain. Living out on the coast you have to follow the advice that we were given when we first got there get a good rain coat and if you don't go out when its raining you aren't going out at all. OK it really wasn't that bad and we had lots of hot sunny days in the summer and lots of grey days in the winter. I can't remember how long it stayed dark but I remember on Canada day where the fireworks were let off at about 22:30 hrs and it still wasn't quite dark enough.
My daughter asked to see if I could get a transfer back there but the company that I worked for at the time has stopped operation on the North Coast and the one that I work for now does have operations there but not for my job. |

Vancouver Island not Victoria Island. Victoria is on Vancouver Island though and the capital of British Columbia. Yes it is beautiful place. if you want to be away from the snow then try that area, Vancouver and the lower mainland. Other areas of BC though do get snow. We can't tell you how often the sun shines because it varies from year to year, month to month, day to day, hour to hour. yes there is cloudy days but then there is lots of sunny days as well. |
