Alexandra Park is a former Toronto Housing project directly south of Kensington Market, south/west of Spadina and Dundas.
"Alexandra Park is a 410 unit housing project in downtown Toronto. The project was built in 1968, and includes 140 apartments in two medium rise apartment buildings and 270 townhouses. Many people who live in the project have low incomes.
The residents of Alexandra Park entered into a process of converting their community from a government housing project into a non-profit housing co-operative. The co-op came to be called the Atkinson Housing Co-operative, named after Sonny Atkinson, a long time president of the Alexandra Park Residents’ Association (APRA). It was Sonny Atkinson who led the Alexandra Park residents as they began the process of converting from public housing to co-op housing." Co-op Housing Federation of Toronto website.
This is a very diverse neighbourhood. It is known for a lot of things besides gang activity. The residents worked like hell for many years to try and improve their community. It is one of the first neighbourhoods experimenting with close circuit police cameras. I live and work fairly close by and I almost never hear of significant crimes there. I do hear that there is a fair amount of drug activity, b&e's, etc.The part of town really well known for gang violence is way uptown in the 'burbs.
I have no problems walking through this neighbourhood in the daytime. Lots of kids, families, activity, etc. I have never been there at nightime.
By the way, I have never heard of gang tourism before, interesting. |

Toronto is an international destination for alot of gangs and gang members who are retiring. Gangs have found Toronto has work for them; it's own good, domestic dope, and laws that are liberal for crimes; so, it's really the place to be to retire: you can kinda support those still trying to make a living in, for example, grow ops which is good domestic dope that the US doesn't mind as much importing because it's not from out of the country like Jamacain and you don't have to worry about those cops they hired from there, but there is the BC Bud and it's historical problem with DEA exporting to the states and it's affect on Torontonian grow op dope and the impression that it has to follow the BC Bud pattern exporting to the states. Guns are a problem that the mayor has addressed after the big counter drug op with the feds and the terrorists that responded to the gangs and grow ops and wanted to raid Parliament and cut offf the PM's head' everyone has agreed these have to go.
A documentary is tough since the gangs are global and there are alot of retirees that have have had dad and grand dad and grandma out their pimpin for Lucifer and a future. |
