It depends on what sort of action you're looking for and what sort of budget you're on. If you like the 'frontier edge' and a good job market, Prince George is a bustling little city. If you're looking for a gentler lifestyle, anywhere in the Okanagan valley is good, but housing isn't easy or inexpensive. Jobs aren't quite as easy to come by as in PG.
If you're looking at the Greater Vancouver area, that's where the action is really centered. There is an exciting lifestyle, great jobs, but housing can be a real problem unless you've got a pretty substantial bankroll.
Victoria, on Vancouver Island, is in a world all its own. The Island is really lovely, but any time you want to go anywhere, you're faced with that ferry ride back to the mainland. Again, it just depends on what you are looking for.
There's a good website at HelloBC.com that can give you some good tips.

If it's action you're looking for, I would recommend Yale town. The West end is also hip and, a little trivia for you, it is the second most densely populated place on earth behind a hood in Tokyo. The West end is also a lot closer to the beach and Stanley Park. Kitsilano is also a nice hood and close to beaches, but a bit more laid back and quieter than the downtown core.

Vancouver is bustling but way too over crowded for me. I prefer Victoria. There are plenty of opportunities for work and it's doing nothing but grow grow grow. For example, the university is now building five new buildings for September. It is so beautiful there. I live in Vancouver but only because I have to go to UBC, but as soon as I can I'm moving back to Victoria because I love it so much.

I guess the Lower Mainland & southern Vancouver Island would be where the action is. As far as the best part that is subjective and depends on what you like. I think the area I live in is "The Best". You can check it out at my regional site. http://boundarybc.tripod.com/

The closest thing to action in BC is Vancouver. It's the only place that is big enough to have anything approaching action. The rest of BC is very pretty and great to visit but if you like cities (even small-ish ones), Vancouver is the way to go.

OK, I don't actually have an answer, but I just wanted to say how envious I am! If I ever get the chance to live there, I don't think I could live anywhere but on the water - Coal Harbour was stunning, and there were alot of new condos going up when I was there - Sept '05 (in advance of the Olympics and just 'cause.)

Depending on your budget, Vancouver can be very expensive. If you want to live near there, however, check out Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam, Langley, etc.

if you would like to live close to the city and do not want to pay the sky high real estate prices that almost all of the local municipalites have, i would reccommend the town of mission (population approx 35,000, only an hour from downtown vancouver) which cost roughly half as much to buy a home as vancouver does. there is much projected growth in the future and with that growth there will likely be a rise in real estate prices which makes buying in the near future an excellent investment.
