Definitely convert in Canada - you will get a better rate.

Be careful carrying large amounts of cash. It can be really easy to just withdraw as you need to from an ATM or to pay with credit card or debit card as you will get the latest rate from the bank with each purchase. Virtually every store and restaurant in Canada takes Interac (debit) and credit card payments. Find out about usage fees and daily transaction limits from your own bank before you go. Some UK banks set a daily or even weekly limit of $500 CAD, so be sure and ask before you come.

Good luck, and welcome in advance to Canada!

I get the bulk of my Canadian dollars from M@S They give a really good exchange and no commision.I have changed some British pounds in Canada and had to pay commision.Hope this helps

Be cautious of using ATMs in a strange country. You can get hit with extra charges and a not so good exchange rate. I still use old fashioned traveller's cheques. They are exchangeable anywhere and totally insured.

When we travel back home to the UK we usually have travelers cheques for our spending money and cash them at bank there. HOWEVER sometimes we do not want to cash a large cheque at the shops so we use our Canadian bank cards at the cash points and get what we need there. A colleague of mine that is the only way he and is partner travel in the UK is with their Canadian bank cards. Check with your bank to see if your card is good in Canada.

Enjoy your trip dress warm it is still winter here and safe home

I'm from the UK but live in Canada and I find that I get a better rate here in Canada.

It seems to me that the most common way of purchasing anything here is by "Debit Card" which you use to pay for your purchases and it takes the money out of your bank account immediately. Credit cards charge your purchases and send you a bill later. So if you have a debit card, bring that with you and you could use it almost anywhere.

But you should bring some cash with you which you can exchange at the Airport - although, I find that the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) gives me the best rate. At the moment the rate is about $2 for each British pound, which is not really all that good.
