"Do Canadian citizens need a visa and/or a Machine Readable Passport to enter or transit the United States as part of the Visa Waiver Program?

A: As of October 26, 2004, the U.S. Visa Waiver Program requires visitors from various countries to have Machine Readable Passports to enter the U.S. This requirement does not apply to Canadian citizens even if the passport is issued abroad. Canadian citizens generally do not require a visa to travel to the United States. However, non-citizen permanent residents of Canada (and their children) as well as a list of other people (i.e. foreign government officials, officials and employees of international organizations, treaty traders and investors, fiancé/es and children of fiancé/es) do require a non-immigrant visa to enter the United States. Additional information is available from Passport Canada. The U.S. Customs & Border Protection agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security also provides information.

Please consult the update on the status of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative for information on the proposed requirement for passport or alternate secure document (still to be determined) for entry of all visitors, including Americans and Canadians, to the United States."

I travelled from Niagara falls and drove down to buffalo for shopping. You don't need a pass port, however. you can't get in with a record unless you have a pardon or letter from them stating you are allowed in. All you have to do is have birth cert. of the driver usually that is all they will ask for along with how long and where are you going.
They tend to stop people who look like tourists....lol. More so. My sister in law works in the check in booths. You can also see this guys site about border crossings. lots of good info.

you only need a valid govt issue photo id and proof of citizenship. until january 2007 when you need a passport if travelling by air jan 2008 if by land or sea

Go to the Main Post Office in your area and request a form to fill out for your passport. Make sure you bring your i.d.,s.s.card, birth certificate, proof of address, a marriage license if your married. And I don't know if the cost of passports vary from state to state. I got mine in New Your and it was a little over $100. So check to see how much you need to bring with you. They do take your photo as well, for your passport.

it is case by case, be sure to inquire US embassy or immigration before travelling...

That depends on your citizenship. If you are a visitor to Canada and you want to cross the border to see some of the sights in the US, then you will need a passport. If you are a landed immigrant in Canada, you will not need a passport, but make sure you have your papers with you and good photo ID.
If you are a Canadian citizen, you need ID (like a birth certificate) and some photo ID to prove you are you.
If you have any questions, call the US Consulate, and they will be able to deal with your specific case.
Good luck!

The easy way to find out is to call a local travel office. It is my understanding that you do not need a passport if you are a Canadian or United States citizen to cross the boarder at this time. But soon you will need one no matter who you are.

Check with a local travel agent but mine has told my family that Canadians will need to have passports with them to cross the border by next month (July).
