Which Calgary community is the best to live in and why?

any area but the north east is nice. nothing particularly wrong with the north east, it's just a bit more of a tougher area and has a bad reputation. same with bowness in the north west. best areas are probably bankview, mount royal, kensington, sunnyside, marda loop. those are all fairly close to downtown which is partly why they're so great. they're also pretty expensive. out in the suburbs in the north west (rocky ridge, royal oak, tuscany), and southwest are all pretty nice too and a bit cheaper.

Definitely the SW or NW are the best options - and for this, the more WEST you are the better the areas, must be that proximity to the mountains that is the attraction. This is probably because the city has spread so far south and north, that the downtown is still easily accessed by people who live more west than they do north or south. But this is only important is you plan to be working downtown.

City transit is better in the more established neighbourhoods built prior to the 1990s; most newer areas tend to have slower/less frequent service that require more transfers, this is just simply because of the growth of the city, the transit and infrastructure haven't caught up to some of these places yet. Same can be said for schools, if you have a young family you may want to look at areas that already have or will have a school built this year or next. Some new areas will not have schools built for many years to come, which mean your kids have to be bused to other areas and their classmates may not be from their neighbourhood (for playmates purposes is what I'm saying).

If you work anywhere else than downtown, depending on how patient you are in traffic, if your career will have you work in the deep south at the Douglasdale business park or the Foothills industrial park, you may want to look at living in the very deep South - east or west in the new communities are equally fine. Same with the North, if you're working in the NE industrial park, you may want to live in the NW, some of the newer communities in the NE are okay (Panaroma, Coventry Hills, Country Hills) but don't venture too far east. Personally I work in the NE but prefer to live in the SW, I have a long commute but my spouse works in the SE and we love the SW so we both endure a long commute so we can be happy in our home life.

You said you have a family, so you are likely looking at the suburbs. It also depends on where you will be working as you want to minimize your commute.

The NW and the SW are probably the nicest areas of the city to live in. Depending on how old of an area you want, here is some idea:

NW : 15 years and newer
Tuscany
Rocky Ridge
Panorama
Royal Oak
and anything around those areas.

NW : older than 15 years
Dalhousie
Varsity
Silver Srings
Edgemont
Hawkwood

SW: 15 years or newer
Richmond Hill
Springhill
Discovery
Aspen Woods
Cougar Ridge

SW: older than 15 years
Strathcona
Coach Hill
Signal Hill
Altadore
Glamorgan
North Glenmore Park
Garrison Woods

There are other areas of the SW further south like Bridlewood, Evergreen, etc... that many families are happy with but I find them too far from downtown where I work.

Yes come live in the south. I left Calgary a while ago but came back moved too Heritage. This is one of the smartest moves I've done in a while. L.R.T is close and Chinook Centre is AWESOME.
