Which city in Canada should I visit? |
I will have the opportunity to spend a week or two in Canada this winter. Its my first time! Which city should I go to? Additional Details I've got a $300 voucher with Air Canada. I need to be in Oregon for Dec 24-25, but the week(s) before OR after, I need to use my ticket before it expires.
I'm into museums/history stuff. But winter festival sounds cool. Thanks for the great info so far! |

You are being given a carte blanche on the area?? It is a huge country you know. What are your interests? bmizzle has mentioned Quebec City. This would be an especially great choice if you can make it for the Quebec's Winter Festival. Otherwise, it is a great historical and cultural center that is well worth seeing.
If you are out to kick up your heals - Montreal is a great place for that as well as a place to check out some more of Canada's history.
Ottawa - lots of history and tons of great museums. Both Ottawa and Montreal are within easy reach of the Laurentians - ski center for eastern Canada.
Out west - my choices would be either Calgary, Alberta or Vancouver B.C. Both are close to the mountains and ski areas, national parks etc. though I would personally prefer to see either of them in the spring or summer. However if you are somewhere on or near the west coast of the U.S.A., Calgary or Vancouver would be a better choice if all you have is a week.
Now what you really want to do is talk yourself into a similar arrangement for the summer. Then you will have tons of possibilities that take in St. Johns Nfld to Victoria B.C. and everything in between (that's about 5,000 miles give or take).
If you want to come back with more details, we could give you more and better information.
EDIT:
Quebec Carnival is great - just remember when you are planning this - it is a very long way away from Portland. |

I'd go out west to Vancouver and Victoria. The Rockies are amazing in winter and be sure to go to Banff and Jasper through the crows nest pass. |

yeah
I think Québec city is the best city to visit in the winter. Its so beautiful. It looks like a little christmas village in Europe.
You could go to The Carnaval de Québec, wich is I think is in one of the top 5 of the most important festivals in the world. We celebrate winter. There is also the ice hotel..great experience..but expensive. Québec city is the city of culture in Canada. Québec is the earth of French Canada culture.
take a look!

Quebec City is very nice and Ottawa is worth checking out - nice towns for canada's unextensive history. Montreal is undeniably one of canada's more distinctive hubs with it's own feel, a city to visit for sure. Vancouver is highly over rated and the Olympics have made a bit of a mess of things, but BC is by far the nicest province if you like nature and scenery. Toronto is where you want to go if you like a metropolis with a good nightlife. Niagra falls is a tourist trap galore, and the overpriced and bland services are hardly worth the view. |

I'd go for Newfoundland. St. Johns, Grand Falls and Deer Lake are all very nice communities, and the newfoundlanders are really nice, it contains many historic sites, like where the battle of beaumont hamel was fought, historic sites on traditional newfoundland, I.E. a place where you can go into a traditonal soapbox style house and have a old traditional mug up. There are also a lot of festivals = )...and shopping!
Also Quebec is very nice, I'd go to Montreal. |
