Stick to the coast where the winter lasts a week if that; preceeded by a really long fall and followed by a really long spring. Calgary, you'll be looking at 6 months of snow and cold followed by 2 months of mud and slush, followed by 4 months of dusty insane heat and nasty soccer-ball sized mosquitoes and black flies.
I'll take my beachside, insect-less, oceanfront city any day, even if it is wetter than most places. Want to know something surprising though? New York City gets more precipitation on average in a year than Vancouver. You don't hear the New Yorkers complaining. Its only the newbies to Vancouver that gripe about the weather. |

Vancouver is now a hot spot for the construction - due to the 2010 Olympic.
BUT it's terribly expensive to live on an average income. A tiny, 2-bedroom flat is around $2,000,000 CDN.
It's wet ( average rain fall: 2000 mm/year), and continuously gray.
You don't even need to keep your small red fish in a bowl..it can swim freely from one room to another :-)))))))))))
BTW, do you know what does BC stand for?
Scroll down.....
Bring Cash :-))))))))))))))
Good luck in finding a good job and a decent place to live. |

I suggest that you ignore Goldista's answers. For one thing - you can buy a Condominium Unit in Vancouver for CAN $300,000 to
$400,000. The Summers are beautiful and in the winter you have a five star Resort at Whistler. Even better is Victoria, BC - you should check that out. |

Calgary
Less competition for the job, and more jobs available.
Many contractors are moving here from Vancouver, an opposite stream from 10 years ago.
As for Calgarys weather? The third most temperate climate in Canada, behind Vancouver and Victoria. And I will take a couple weeks of cold anytime over months of continuous rain. When there is snow, it is still sunny and it is still easy to carry stuff around without getting wet.
But really, weather is just a preference thing anyway.
Both cities are amazing and beautiful, but I personally think you'd have better job opportunities in Calgary.
And Calgary also has the second highest number of head offices in Canada behind Toronto, so there is a crazy amount of construction happening now and in the near future. |

There are around 150 civil engineers listed for Calgary and around 580 for Vancouver (see weblinks below).
I know which one I would choose - not only for job prospects, but for all-round lifestyle as well. |
