I'll give you an answer from a different point of view.
Firstly Water, Canada has abundant water and even electricity is produced from water(hydro), Australia has limited water and they use electricity to product water (desalination). In the long run water will be a deciding factor for industrial growth.
Oil, Again Canada has sufficient oil reserves and also is an oil exporting country.
Weather: Sydney will be more enjoyable because of the beaches and the warm weather. Toronto has 4 months of freezing weather 4 of chilled / warm and 4 of warm, but Toronto has got a Great Lake.
People: I can only comment on Canada cos not been to Sydney. People are very good, helpful and outgoing in Canada.
Lifestyle: its not very expensive to find a house in Toronto and there are many means of financing your property, generally cost of living is affordable even if you earn minimum wages. I'm not so sure about Sydney.
Hope the above helps you in ur decision. If you want to know more email me.

Sydney WOHOOO lol im in Sydney and it ain't too bad a place.
But honestly i would rather Toronto Canada because we are so alone down here and Toronto is close to new work and all those other cool places in my opinion but thats probably because i have never seen it before.
Plus housing prices in Australia are sky rocketing, so much that i'm thinking of moving overseas entirely.
P.s where are you from?
You need an Aus citizen ship if you want to stay here which invloves taking a test that most aussies would fail.
ill recheck to see if you need some real info
Australia and Candada seem to have the same HDI (life expectancy) and also the same income (dependng on what qualifications you have)

I am presently a resident of Toronto, and spent 17 years in OZ (mostly WA but lived many chunks in Sydney) and the answer really depends on what you want out of life.
TO is closer to NYC and La and Europe and is the financial capital of Canada. Sydney is closer to ..lots of surf. Torontonians can be money chasing BUT there is amazing opportunity here, as well as vibrant music (all sorts), art and film scenes. Sydney is a more beautiful city, if you can afford to live anywhere near the centre, and the lifestyle is laid-back and friendly. Toronto is close to lake and forest, and goes to a VERY important point, that Robroy mentioned: WATER. And not so much for economic reasons but life itself. We can live without petrol but we cannot survive without water and our future wars will be over water. Canada, has a LOT of it.
So, think of yourself now, or your grandchildren later.
