Yikes!
After January 23, 2007, you will need a passport.

Tate
that depends, if you are flying you need a passport and if you are driving, any type of legal ID that has your picture on it.

too tired to sleep
A passport or your original birth certificate.

AUCT!ON
I use a passport all the time, and it'll become mandatory soon.

A passport for Canada or Mexico.

As of right now a state issued ID should be OK. If you are traveling with children you might want to bring their birth certificates. You will soon need a passport to go back and forth to Canada, but I don't think it is this month.

To go to the USA by air; effective January 23, 2007 you will need a passport.

To go to the USA by land and sea, you will need a passport no sooner than January 2008.

To go to Canada...you need proof of citizenship (orginal birth certificate) and government issued valid photo ID. (generally a drivers license) If you have a passport, you can also use this, but it is not required.

Wikpedia is a great site, but it is not 100% reliable. All sites I have looked have always referred to the passports being required TO the USA (re-entry and entry by air and eventual other ways) but never the entry to Canada.

The United States Department of Homeland Security announced that most Canadians will soon require a passport to enter that country. The new passport requirement will affect citizens of Canada, who currently only need to show identification (usually a driver's licence) and proof of Canadian citizenship (usually a birth certificate) upon request to enter the United States. It is expected that the demand for passports will increase in light of the new policy.

In response to this policy, the Canadian government enacted a new rule stating that most Americans will also require a passport to enter Canada, though they, like Canadians, would also need a passport to reenter the United States.
