Which neighborhood in Vancouver, B.C....? |
Long story short, I’m moving to Canada (Vancouver) in January (permanently) and am planning on attending UBC to continue my education.
I was wondering if any of you can give me any advice on which are the best neighborhoods in Vancouver to live in, and I mean ‘good’ in terms of affordable, nice, safe, and somewhat close to UBC (20min drive, or less).
I’m 23 years old, and an English/Literature major; a writer interested in the arts, cinema, bohemian lifestyle, etc.
Moving is such a challenging task. I moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles ten years ago, and now I’m moving again. I really do need all the help I can get, information-wise.
Thanks!!!

Kitsilano, without a doubt is the best place for you to live. Beaches, young people, safe, former hippie area a little more yuppie now but still holding on to its roots. You are able to walk everywhere to do the things you need to do. Greenpeace started here. UBC also has lots of places to live on campus. If you are interested in meeting new people who are students that would be a good place for you to live for the first semester until you get your feet wet in the city,
UBC offers discounted bus passes and is the most economical way to get there. They also have fast track buses to get there ( refered to as B line buses ) from Kitsilano it would take 20 minutes, same as driving really. |

Affordable is always a problem in Vancouver with the high real estate prices and longstanding low vacancy rate. The 20 minute drive might be a bit of a challenge since UBC is kind on the edge of town though it's well-serviced by transit at least during school hours. The closest neighbourhoods would be UBC area itself, which has houses and some apartments, Kitsilano or Kerrisdale which do too, and you might consider the Main Street area from about 16th to 41st. The first three neighbourhoods are fairly upscale in terms of prices but there are certainly some reasonably priced rental suites there. Main Street will be somewhat cheaper and definitely fits the arts/bohemian side of things. All those neighbourhoods are pretty good, and good places to live, Main Street being a little more lively and more 'downtown' with the usual things that come with that. It's interesting, though, and is a definite community where some people stay for a long time. I've known a number of people who have lived there all their lives and wouldn't live anywhere else in Vancouver. |

Finding an affordable place is going to be tough in Vancouver. If you're going to UBC, Kitsilano is close to UBC and safe. However, it is also more expensive than other areas. If you are looking for something more affordable, Commercial Drive would be the place to be. And it is only one bus ride away from UBC. Suerte. |

i strongly recommend that you don't drive to UBC. I have lots of friends that have older siblings that go to UBC. They never drive there because its really really hard to find a parking spot. its much easier to get a u pass and take the bus. you could take the 99 b-line that goes to UBC. the b-line is a bus line that makes really few stops, so its much faster than the regular bus.
also...affordable place and close to ubc don't mix. houses really close to UBC cost over a million dollars, so i really doubt that rent close to there would be cheap. and places surrounding UBC are basically really expensive. UBC is located close to the rich parts of vancouver where homes cost around that millions (at least) i suggest that you get a house in a city close to vancouver, such as burnaby, richmond, etc.
however, it you really want to live in vancouver. i suggest that you rent one room. i have tons of friends that rent out a spare room in their house for students to live in. |

affordability shouldn't be much of a problem for you if you've just come form LA. What about University area in Vancouver West? Anywhere in this area is good actually:

Closest to UBC:

Try living close to the sky train as it goes right to UBC. Prices for homes are going down and the cheapest would probably be in Surrey. Also since your comming from hot places be sure to bring lots of warm clothes and an umbrella!! |
