Whilst waiting on connecting flights?

We are travelling from London to Las Vegas on Air Canada. The flight goes through Calgary on the outbound and Toronto, ontario on the inbound. I have chosen a connecting flight in Toronto with a 16hr gap, during this time will we be able to leave the airport to visit Toronto for the day? I have asked Air Canada staff 3 times and each time I have been given a different answer but no on seems to be certain. Any one know for sure? Thanks

You'd have better luck asking Canada Border Services Agency. The issue you are looking at is that you will have to go through customs when you arrive at Pearson Int'l before you leave the airport. And you'll have to return to check in again 3hrs before your flight leaves. Add to that the problem of your baggage. In these days of increased security they will no doubt have an issue with the fact your belongings will be checked through to London, but you may not be on the plane.

Here's their website:

The airline will not have a problem with you leaving the airport so long as you are back in time to catch your conencting flight. The issue will be whether Canadian immigration will let you into Canada. Speak to the Canadian authorities. I believe a previous respondent may have given you contact details.

Since you will be switching to a US bound flight you will clear Canadian Customs and Immigration in Toronto, and then you will also clear US Customs and Immigration in Toronto airport. (When you arrive in Vegas you just grab your bags and go - just like a US domestic flight). If I remember, the customs hall in Pearson Airport (Toronto) has two exits; one for passengers entering Canada, and one for passengers continuing to the US. I think US Bound passengers stay within the "sterile zone" the whole time and their bags are automatically transferred to the US Customs hall where you pick them up before clearing US Customs. If you want to leave the airport you will have to advise Canadian Customs officials. If you are British citizens this shouldn't be a problem. Enjoy your visit!

ASK WHEN YOU GET THERE ,I SHOULD IMAGINE NOT,BUT YOU MAY BE LUCKY,IF YOU PLAY THE BEAUTIFUL CITY CARD,BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PASS TO RETURN.

You may require a transit visa. Have a look at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp

Why did you choose Toronto? You might hear voices or see things while there, so maybe you shouldn't go into the city. Schizophrenia and disease probably aren't wanted by the British.
